  • Hoof shoes, for your inner deer

  • So apparently there's more to it than just wearing incredibly expensive and outlandish costumes..
    https://www.vogue.com/article/met-gala-dress-code-2024

  • It's wearing incredibly expensive and outlandish costumes and being able to spin some bullshit explaining why it very loosely satisfies a vague brief?

  • I think calling it a "brief" is pushing it really. I would have stopped at bullshit. But some very nice outfits though.

  • Officine general or Barena.

Might get the barena from kafka with a code if you're lucky.

  • Am at a summer wedding in a few weeks. Given my "summer wardrobe" contains predominantly t-shirts and sports shorts, I'm in need of a linen/linen blend suit. Where can I try on a reasonable range of styles that's affordable?

  • John Lewis and M&S.

    Assuming affordable means <£500.

Otherwise if you know your size and have time, ebay plus a tailor. Mate did this with a nice dark cream one. I actually have a green linen and silk Jager suit I got from ebay which I'm looking to pass on. It's at my folks and I won't be able to get it for a week or so. But here is a shit picture in case you want me to take some proper ones.

Hard to photo, but a sort of grey green that looks slightly different in different lights.

I was going to get it altered and then covid hit, so the need for summer work suits disappeared, so I never got round to it and now I'm too fat.

2 button, fairly classic / not too tailored, with some nice details.

Size 50s - which I would put around 38"-40" with 34" wasit /32-34" leg trousers.

  • M&S always seems decent for being able to get a wide range of sizes - website seems to have a decent number of results for ‘linen suit’ - prices about £200.

If that’s out of budget, perhaps try Asos? I got my wedding suit in the sale there for about £100 all in - can try a few things and return stuff that doesn’t work.

  • You know what, a quick scan of ebay shows this really is an excellent thing to buy on ebay.

Loads of people clearly do what you're doing (and I have also done) and buy a linen suit, wear it 2-3 times (if that) and sell. Tbh I think I may have even given my cream linen suit to a charity shop.

  • I'm now thinking picking up a navy linen blazer might be a good idea for when I have to go into the office in the summer and don't want to wear a jumper.

  • Done.

    That escalated quickly.

£26.21 for a once worn suit seems worth a punt.

  • Thanks both!

@hugo7 the suit looks great, but a little small for me I'm afraid (pleased it triggered an impulse purchase though!).

    Will get on eBay/John Lewis/M&S.

  • Surely you are either wearing a linen suit, shirt and tie, or are cashh in trousers, shirt and light coloured chore jacket/shacket?

I hate chore jackets but nothing is worse than a linen jacket with chinos... All you need is a straw hat for the full Portillo. Classic moron look on any flight from the UK to Italy from mid July to the end of August.

  • Nothing wrong with a decent Panama at a summer wedding, baldies need a hat.

  • Derek guy just did a good thread on linen suits fyi

  • I have a nice PoW jacket that I struggle to find a colour in trousers that works, the pattern subtly leans violet/blue rather than tan/brown. Not that I ever have occasion to wear it, but it would be nice not to have to think twice about grabbing an appropriate costume. Shirt-wise I would likely lean turtleneck, but could be swayed by a compelling combination.

  • Cheers - just had a look, some decent tips.

  • If you’re realistically only going to get a couple of wears out of it, secondhand all the way. If you prepared to chuck two hundred quid at it, M&S, Moss Bros, Percival. Five hundred then the Original Fibres is nice, indigo not the green (I got this cheap in a pre-sale). I also tried some of the marl Barbour offerings exclusive to Next which were OK but the trouser rise is weird.

  • Thanks all, just picked up a second hand Canali linen/silk blend on eBay. Not the cheapest there, but in my size and looked like it would be a half decent fit.

If it's ok, next up are loafers I guess!

  • The styling of that photo is a mess. None of the clothes fit as far as I can see.

  • A stylist would have hemmed and pinned those trousers FFS!

  • I thought the same

  • Better? Same suit.

I don’t mind the long tie, slightly short trooser look of the former. The trousers come unhemmed and about a foot longer than needed, speaking of which, would you guys get a turn up?

  • Suit too small in this photo IMO. Cuff sits too high above the shoe, sleeves/body of the jacket are too short and the shoulders don't look wide enough.

Yes - would go for a cuff over a hem all day.

I say this as someone who doesn't even own a suit anymore.

  • Speaking as someone who has never owned a suit I can say with authority that the jacket sleeves are a good length and can't see the problem with the shoulders. Body length is maybe too short, but that is down to personal taste.

I was talking about the youngster further up BTW.
