Rode west from here yesterday to see the green-winged orchids and to hear the curlews’ calls. Had to turn back at one point due to flooding, and some of the roads were rivers, but good to be out.

21C and got sunburned. Didn't take sunnies or cap. Le whoops. Beautiful though.

Did you get shot at?
Somewhere around the bottom of the lake there used to be (in 1998) a shooting range where the shooting positions were one side of the road, and the targets on the other side. The first I knew about it was hearing the crackling/sizzling sound a bullet makes over head, very quickly followed by the bang from the gun. I damn near shat myself and probably did my best ever 30 second power numbers as I got the fuck out of there.
I mentioned it to my (Swiss) boss at work on Monday and apparently it's quite common. (There are a lot of shooting ranges in Switzerland as there's a shooting test every year as part of your military service).

It was literally snowing in town a day or so before and we got super lucky with the weather on the weekend. It's gorgeous over there and Zurich city feels a bit like Amsterdam with so many bikes cruising around. We even ran into the Critical Mass over there!

Ah, I replied on Strava but yeah, didn't notice any shooting. We did have dinner the night before in an old armory now restaurant but no shooting IIRC. Do you know where it was? Looked like lots of open cow fields around the bottom of the lake and not much going on.
How long were you in Zurich for? If you ignore all the filthy rich supercar-driving fucks it's a really funky city with tonnes of bikes and I'd definitely go back again. Only had bikes for one day so did some walking on the other days but yeah, great public transport and lots of stuff going on.

I was there for just over a year. Was contracting and the company changed their policy at the end of my contract to recruit permanent staff instead and, as my contract was tied to the job, I had to leave.
I liked Zurich, it’s an amazing location and it’s easy to get to loads of places, but, back then at least, the Swiss just weren’t interested in being social with foreigners, so you end up in a bubble of other foreigners, which I didn’t enjoy so much.

hippy's not challenging enough as a practice target.

The train system is massive there. Half of Zurich is a train station! Love it.
I was only there a few days so can't really comment on the Swiss socialising other than everyone there speaks English so for holidays it takes a lot of annoying language barrier drama away.
My "best" work trip remains a 1st class ticket to Liverpool and back so I am not going to shed a tear for you :P
My mate goes back and forth to Switzerland quite a bit and I was only there this time because my partner was working there.

Lovely sunny 100k to Harting Down and back. Only had two Yorkies all day so absolutely hanging at the end for food.

Tiling in East London turns out to be more shit than expected. At least I've done most of the busy as fuck bits between Romford and Basildon now.

'tis! We were up the highland near Koppang, where the snow made it hard to ride a loop, so it's mostly up and down the same road, but in a week or so it will all be gone and the secondary roads will be rideable again. Melting pretty fast at 21 degrees C yesterday and almost as warm the days before :-/
Another attraction here is this giant shiny moose along the road north to Atna.

I also started tiling again. I guess it's better than grinding my bike into dust on a 20km loop and when I moan that it's shit to ride everywhere I will have the experience to back it up.
Did East Ham, Barking, Elm Park, Rainham, Thurrock on Saturday and Dartford to Sydenham today to add a bit in the south.

A friend and I did an Imperial Century around a bit of Cambridgeshire and a whole lotta Norfolk today. In broad terms Ely>Feltwell>Great Massingham>King's Lynn>Outwell/Upwell>Ely. We hit a vertiginous 100m altitude in Norfolk.
The weather was glorious and the pub in Great Massingham still serves a very good pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord. And my legs lasted for 130km, after which I had to take a tow into the headwind for a while until they were reinvigorated by the sight of Ely Cathedral in the distance.
All in all, a grand day out.

Went out yesterday with a 180k plan to bag tiles and miles. Bailed with less than 100k on the clock after crashing up a slippery path avoiding a flood and forgetting to charge my Di2 left me somewhat lacking in the gear department. No photos because it fucking pissed down the whole time didn't it?
Good prep for 1000k Mittelgewhatsit

Made it all of 1 mile from the house before the freehub on my MTB shat itself into oblivion, leaving me spinning my legs and not moving. Like a twat. Thanks Hunt Wheels. Scooted and walked back home, swapped out for the gravel bike and headed out to enjoy the rare sunshine. Saw some deer. Rode some “gravel”. Good times.

Absolutely right. Impressive. It's my favourite part of that ride, although I'm not sure why. The fact I usually stop off for a quick pint at the pub in Great Massingham when I do that ride might have something to do with it though.
Got into my own SFAB scenario yesterday. I downloaded a route following along the M25 but the forecast was crap and I only got going in the afternoon so I thought I just check out how to modify it to skip the Dartford crossing. Then ended up riding it for quite some time, got completely soaked after dark and then scratched in some place called Gerrards Cross.
The main highlight was Enfield Greenway, so different from all the rest. All the other country lanes are so mind numbingly dull, it's like moving through some endless underground tunnel system.
