  • Who does good white cotton sports socks?

  • Where's good for black tie rental in London? I'm off to a frustratingly boujie wedding at the end of summer.

  • If you can be arsed with the admin, you're likely better trying to find a decent suit second hand, get it tweaked for a proper fit then sell it on afterwards, hopeful costing less in total than hiring anything better than the most basic '6th form prom' offering....

  • This is actually a pretty good shout. Especially as you've got plenty of time.

I'm not sure it'll be less than hiring though.

If you've got time I'd start looking for shirts now and possibly set up some Ebay searches. They're pretty expensive, and aren't on sale when you want one. I got mine from JL with some sort of discount and it was still ÂŁ60.

  • No never checked that out ta. đź‘Ťđź‘Ť

  • Cotton is a poor choice for a sports sock.

  • If you think you're going to wear it more than once I'd probably buy one rather than rent. I got one from M&S I think that wasn't much more than the hire fee and didn't seem much different to the hire suits.

If you've got the time then I'd definitely go second hand, there are plenty out there and they go for very low prices in the main.

  • Wow, Decathlon have really upped their website game

  • Wait till you see the ag2r kit

  • That's easy when you start with a 20 years old catastrophe.

  • Disagree. Maybe depends on what your'e doing but as a runner I do all my running in cotton socks (some have elastine etc but mostly cotton). I don't need them to wick sweat and understand that eventually they will wear out.

  • Strictly lama gooch imo.

    Excellent wicking and antibacterial properties.

  • Not actually sporting in the sport socks, unless commuting counts. As usual, Uniqulo has the answer

  • I tend to find cotton socks become soaked and then cause blisters.

  • There’s a 20% sale across all lines on Arket which finishes tonight and if you sign up with a new email address you can get an additional 10%.

  • Sorry, thought I'd replied to the black tie responses the other day! I'm quite lazy (and don't want to wear black tie anyway) so renting still seems quite appealing. Either way, what should I look for in black tie? It seems pretty strict but is there any variation in style/fit at all generally?

  • Fuck, I'm going to have to get fancy shoes as well aren't I? Not sure my doc martens shoes are going to cut it.

  • The thing with renting is in principle it makes sense, use once and not be stuck with something you’ll never wear again but for the cost, buying secondhand and selling after to recover most of the outlay is the approach I’d be taking. It depends how super sharp you want to be but you’re coming across as an unwilling participant so I’d be looking at how to attend without breaking the bank.
A friend recently told me a story how he reluctantly attended a fancy wedding and asked his wife if he could wear flip flops. She thought he was joking and sarcastically replied “of course” only to discover upon arrival that he’d done just that. Apparently the mother of the bride had a shit fit.

  • you’re coming across as an unwilling participant

You're absolutely right and now I feel like a dick, haha. I really should make the effort. After all, how many posh cousin's weddings am I likely to attend in my life?
I'm also off to 3 other weddings this year that will all be fairly casual so I should try and enjoy this as something a bit different.
If anyone's got a lead on some vegan shoes that would work for a black tie do that'd be really handy. (Ideally not flip flops).

  • I mean unless you live somewhere like Australia where I understand DJs are traditional wedding attire, you're unlikely to attend another wedding with it as a dresscode.

  • I take it that 2nd hand non-vegan shoes are off the menu so to speak?

I’d echo what @inchpincher says, but a second hand DJ/tux off eBay and the. Repost once you’re done

  • I’ve been to two weddings in the past couple of decades where black tie was the dress code. Both were Indian weddings and it was for the evening do for the final day.

I used to have a DJ in my 20s cos there were a fair few posh piss ups to attend. I got mine 2nd hand

  • I'd prefer vegan shoes but I think that might be slim pickings!

  • Primark?

Pretty sure all their shoes are vegan.
