  • ...actually that's 70-80 active devices, not active users.

  • I feel privileged

  • I use it almost exclusively now. The only time I fire up the browser is to edit a comment.

One thing I'd like to mention:
If you do a search on the app, followed by another or more searches, the X symbol in the top left doesn't take you out of search, it takes you back. So if you've made several consecutive searches, you have to keep tapping it to get off the search function. I think it would be best if it took you as default back to the thread you started on or back to Today/Following/Home, wherever you started out.

  • Any interest in making a simple Wear OS app?

    To deeper feed my addiction....

  • BTW I really like how the font renders as blocks when async fetching titles.

It reminds me of the much covetted Condor Lavoro of around 2008

  • Good catch, I'll try some things out...

  • I don't have any Wear OS gear, but making an app for a watch would be a good excuse to get one. What kind of features would an an LFGSS client for a watch have though? I assume the tiny screen severely limits what you can realistically do?

    That condor is beautiful

  • Is there any way to implement the feature that the website has whereby clicking on the comment age "11 months ago" makes it change to the actual date?

  • You can long-press on it to get the real date. Is that's what you're looking for?

  • Oh nice, that's perfect. I hadn't realised

  • I would happily read threads on my watch...

Would be up for a bit of collaboration if you are?

I've done a (tiny) bit of android devving and have been looking for a wear os project...

  • I think i fucked up the quoting there.

Can I edit posts in the app?

  • Can we have "likes" on comments? :D

  • So, this app uses the Flutter framework - I've just been looking into it, and the framework developers explicitly state that supporting Wear OS is not one of the design goals. That said, there has been community effort to get flutter apps running on watches.

So I'd guess it might be possible to re-purpose the codebase, but it might be a bit of struggle, and it might be brittle.

The other option is to build a new native app from scratch. Is that what you imagined doing?

Re editing: still not possible in the app - still top of my to-do list 😬

  • You'd have to talk to bossman about that 😅

  • Ah, given flutter it sounds like a whole new UI might be best. Possibly sharing whatever back end stuff from this app is reusable.

Have you shared the code on GitHub or similar?

  • I had a thought re a Wear OS companion app.

A use case I have is to keep a close eye on certain threads, not all of the ones that I am following. A sales thread, a ride I'm on, mega popcorn etc etc

Perhaps one could mark a thread as for the watch, in the main app, and then these would be visible for reading on the wrist.

Maybe only surface the option if a paired watch app is installed?

    Just a thought.

I think that to get started I will fork your code and then cannibalise it into a very basic thread reading app.

Maybe if I get that far we could then have a chat about integration?

  • I really like the idea of favourited or "starred" threads. I think it would be really useful in the app too. I suspect people would use it to reduce notifications from the mobile app without having to unsubscribe from a bunch of threads. I know I would!

My only reservation is that I think that functionality should live on the server side, but that would be an issue: it would be fairly straight forward to implement it on the server side, but the web front end would also need to be upgraded, and that's basically a no-go afaiu. (Any thoughts @Velocio ?)

If you can getting anything working, I'm keen to get it integrated though.

  • Can't get the today page to load. All others work fine. Tried closing app but it's the same on reopening. Can't get it to try and refresh.

  • Works on my s22
Edited just for the hell of it!
Now works on my s22 even better

  • Is it still broken now? I'm seeing some weirdness too, but it's at least partially working

  • I'm guessing it's the "Gone Badgering" thread - an event without a start time, which I'm clearly not handling very well. If it appears in the first page of results then the app doesn't know how many pages there are and gives up

  • Still broken for me yeah
