• Been groomed? Maybe fed up with being touched?

  • Definitely not. He’s needy af. Loves being near or on people

  • Do any small dog owners on here want a fleece jacket thing and /or a harness? Obvs binface has outgrown them.

  • Went to the pub, and there was a guy there painting dog portraits so we got one done for Otto.

  • Just went to visit a terrier breeder and a bit bemused by the set-up - three litters of puppies all at once, the litter we have come to see are living in a pen adjoining the grooming room in an outbuilding and she’s reluctant to show us that or the whole litter. Then the other litters (a similar breed) are living in a small pen in the house but again we can’t go in and see them there, I just peered in through a window.

I can’t see any kind of stimulation the puppies would get where they are currently living and she was a bit vague about that.

The dogs seem perfectly healthy and lively - although the indoor ones are perhaps a bit timid - but I can’t shake the feeling that these are breeders cashing in on their reputation to do a bit of puppy farming before they retire.

What does it seem like to any of you?

  • It sounds very grim and a bit cruel. Not someone I'd want to pay and encourage!

  • I can’t shake the feeling that these are breeders cashing in on their reputation to do a bit of puppy farming before they retire.

What would give you the impression that this isn't what they've always done and will continue to do?

  • Would avoid! Socialisation and care in those early weeks plays a huge part of how the dog will behave through the rest of its life. If you’re getting that vibe already, do you think they’re going to the effort of socialising and desensitising the puppies? Do you think they’ve done health checks or considered the compatibility and temperament of the parents?

  • Thanks all. My wife and I were discussing on the way home and it felt like these were red flags but it’s good to know it’s not just groupthink on our part! They’ve a string of Crufts prizes and have been judges for the breed in question, so I’m willing to believe they weren’t always this way, but perhaps they were and the industry needs a long hard look at itself.

  • the industry needs a long hard look at itself.

    Very much so.

  • Honestly, some pure-bred breeders, especially the ones who go to Crufts a lot, are…not great from a perspective of breeding dogs you actually want to live with. Unfortunately when the dog is judged almost entirely on looks, behaviour stuff often goes by the wayside.

  • Water activity genes activated

  • What a beautiful dog - that's shit news, really sorry to hear it. All the best to you and the other dog.

  • Sorry for your loss.
    Dogs are the best.

  • Its been absolutely brutal. Our other dog we adopted at 4 months, she is deaf and has never been an only dog and is struggling

  • Really sorry to hear it!

  • We're looking after a friend's dog for a few days (Crumpet's best friend). She's very sweet but ridiculously energetic. It was lovely having them both cuddled up on the sofa last night. Less lovely having them practice their wrestling moves on our bed at 7am this morning.

  • Hardly a ringing endorsement but I’ve got 2 weeks of Tuggs raw dog food sat in my freezer.
Bailey has tried it twice and thrown it straight up.

Anyone want to try the ruffolution or know of somewhere I can send the food?

  • So sad to hear this, my in-laws lost their 9yo Shepherd very suddenly ten days ago. Our doodle is missing her like crazy. RIP Cara, we love you. Here she is as a pup, my in-laws got her a week before we landed in Oz.

  • I'm sick of my garden smelling of dog piss. Especially now the elusive fiery sky-orb is making the odd appearance. Does anyone have any recommendations for something I can spray on the affected areas to neutralise the smell? Needs to be plant-friendly, if possible.

Edit: We have no lawn - it's just decking, gravel and beds/tall grasses, so I dont need to neutralise wee-burn on a lawn, just stop the stench

  • Equal parts water and white vinegar works pretty well.
