I've been trying to practice 'it's only a game' mantra this season, because it is, but it's becoming increasingly difficult. There was little to get excited about in the early 2000's O'Leary/Deadly Doug years compared to now. It's the hope that kills ya

Just looked at the table. Pretty tight

2 points dropped, we should have had all three points well and truly in the bag after that first half but no
got to hope arsenal do an arsenal and get a bit spursy in the last 7 games
tasty close to the season coming up -

Arsenal’s goal difference is worth a point.
Liverpool should be rolling over 6th place United, if they’re genuine contenders.
-

Yep, you can’t miss all those chances. Usually they make mostly good decisions, not today.
They needed to be more like City/Arsenal with the ball in that second half.
That was special from Mainoo. About the only good thing about United.

United shouldn't be dropping 5 points from winning positions inside three days if they are genuine top 4 contenders.

When was the last time United were title contenders? Leicester were contenders more recently, even Spurs.
-
• #168235
They’re not though. I think that’s established.

I’m not saying Liverpool aren’t a damn good squad but they’ve had more than their share of luck this season and I’m glad for the result today.
Going to be the closest run in for years, I might be forgetting but when was the last time there were 3 teams in contention this late in the season? -
• #168237
Possibly 13/14?

[United were last title contenders] 13 years ago.

Old Firm Derby sounded epic today
This is a crazy season all round for late goals

I’m a big Postecoglou fan so maybe bias.
He’s resurrected Werner though and that deserves huge credit

This is the best season for years and years! Still 90% chance of top5 and realistic CL qualification. Chance of a European trophy. Best manager in forever.
Sure - a bit of a stumble currently, but look at the players missing.
A couple of years ago we were mid table championship. Enjoy the ride. -

Also - chelsea... Is that 7 games scoring and conceding 2. Mad.
-
• #168243
I agree with most of that, but yesterday was fucking tragic. That's the fourth time this season they have conceded three or more goals in the second half. Such a soft touch.
I don't want them to just make the numbers up in the CL, like Newcastle, and gain very little from it. It's a lot to expect a squad to go from ECL to CL in one season. Logically it would make more sense to cut our teeth in the EL first, but I understand the financial benefits of the CL coverage cash, especially with PSR having such an impact this season.

I get the frustration, but we are far from the only team to do that. We've still lost fewer points from a winning position than pretty much every side I think.
New CL format might be helpful to hang in there longer than Newcastle and, yeah - the psr cash is pretty vital if we don't want the team to be stripped. -

Joe Kinnear has passed. What a character. Was also a good manager for his era.

Was also a good manager for his era.
His era was definitely over when he managed us. Always seemed like a decent guy though, RIP.

• #168247
Was it Joe Kinnear who named Yohan Kebab and Charles Insomnia?
-
• #168248
Yes. When he was Newcastle manager he also publicly pushed to sign an up and coming West Brom player, who happened to be there on loan from Newcastle.

Leicester were contenders more recently, even Spurs.
Citation needed.

From my understanding of the new format, it looks pretty convoluted - 8 teams drawn, 4 away, 4 at home. It will be longer before you're out, but almost certainly harder to qualify given every team will face two top and middle tier seeded sides. There's also no dropping down to the EL as far as i can make out.
I lived with a villain around the millennium. He was disproportionately invested in a bunch of 20-something millionaires and his mood dictated exclusively by them winning football matches. He wasn't great company
