  • Tate used to do good beans but the roaster left for pastures new (Aus/Nz?) I used to buy beans from the cafe but then there was not a code on the till for them despite a wall of bags on display and you had to go to the gift/book shop but they were several months old.
The roaster was a bit pissed off at that

  • returning home to uk shortly and a kg should be there......

  • 2nd order

  • Really vague reply but last time I visited the Tate Modern I came across a very small roastery which I think was just round the corner and had great espresso! I'll try and dig out the name of the it.

  • On the Tate Modern coffee chat, Monmouth in Borough Market was always a safe bet in that area.

  • Where's good in Bristol these days please? Maybe near the Clifton Bridge or central.

  • On opening the Ethiopian decaf, it smelled very strongly of peanuts, and on brewing it tasted of almost nothing. Could be user error but not an encouraging start..

The Colombian has a bit more to it, think I've got my brew ratio off to be honest so will need to try again tomorrow. Can already feel the caffeine twitch from doubling up on cups this morning.

  • Full court press was great last time I visited.

  • Central: full court press or small st (they’re very close to each other)

  • Ta (& @dimblue too), FCP was good bitd so good to hear still going.

We parked by Coldharbour Rd so a fair walk away might try the hire bikes/scooters

  • Have been really enjoying beans from round hill roasters recently but ordered some James gourmet coffee beans on the reccomendation. Also loving the niche, mostly for its ability to switch between filter and espresso, so it’s probably time to let the eureka go. It’s a mignon specialita, pretty good nick although I’ve somehow managed to chip a little bit at the front.. does £240 sound fair?

  • Ok I'm suitably impressed by James Gourmet coffee. For the price the bean and roast quality is excellent.

    Went for this:

    https://jamesgourmetcoffee.com/product/rwanda-rwamatamu-filter-roast/

Decent fruitiness, not just a background thrum. Not quite a super specialty micro lot taste hit but way more than some roasters promise.

Thanks to all the early adopters on here.

  • Just ordered a couple of bags of James Gourmet. I'm really happy with Yellow Bourbon so will keep using that at home but maybe I'll mix things up at work.

  • On the subject of beans I used to buy from Bailies now an again then when they had them in at one of my local cafes, picked up some Lucid beans locally and it turns out it’s the roaster from Bailies who left and did his own thing a couple of years ago, might explain why I stopped buying as thought the quality had dropped, will see how this one is.

  • Ah yes, I know the new roaster there and he's sorting out all of those sorts of things. Some really nice beans coming out of there these days, even if I am biased - some interesting growers and stories.

They'll be on the Oatly stand Thursday morning at Coffee Festival if anyone is heading up

  • Yes Stephen I think his name is? I used to work at a cafe supplied by Bailies, and when he was on holiday the change in quality was so noticeable. The Lucid stuff is nice

  • +1 for Lucid; they are always good.

  • JG order is in. Thanks for the reminder!

  • I wasn't impressed by my last James Gourmet order, I tried two different types and I found them entirely forgettable. Admittedly I didn't make much effort at dialling them in.
Similarly, as much as an FCP advocate that I am, I'm not super-whelmed by the Idido I ordered recently. It's ok, but again, perhaps I should spend some time adjusting my method.
Or, maybe I'm just a basic bitch and I just go back to reliable ol' Assembly.

  • Interlude
    Sweven
    FCP

Mercy Mercy Mercy or Oddkins/Oddshop might be worth a go if your in Clifton.

  • James Gourmet decaf is the best decaf bean I've had. Previously I liked their single origin stuff, but not keen on blends.

  • reliable ol' Assembly

    £10-£11 for 200g doesn't seem that basic.

    Edit:

Just had a look at FCP and they are also charging £10.50 to quite a bit more, for 200g, so maybe that's the new normal.

  • So by comparison, Square Mile's Red Brick seems decent value at £13.00 / 350g...

  • Assembly are too expensive for what you get IMHO which is why I stopped buying, it’s fine if it’s a real banger but that was happening less and less.
The Lucid brew was nice but not stellar, still good enough to buy from them again. We now have Etude coffee open up round the corner and they are 220g and decent beans so far.

  • I got an Assembly natural filter from somewhere good at the weekend and took it back because it was horrible. A few places near me use them and I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed it
