  • I’m thinking the door alcove may be ok in satin, but the bay matt, may even look good that way.

  • When I need paint I go to the shop, tell them what I'm doing and buy what they recommend.

When I need paint I get my friend Derek the Decorator to source it for me, as he knows far better than I do what the best option is. Mind you, I also then pay him to apply it for me. Yes, I know, it's the DIY thread...

  • Satin finish looks fine. I do a bit of satin ironwork in black, satin masonry not so much but just from a practical perspective gloss is more durable.

  • Did you organise it yourself though? Maybe that's ok then.

  • Fuck me, the second pot of Zinnser doesn’t even match the first, codes are 100% the same.

Fuck paint in general, fuck Zinnser, and fuck colour matching of any sort, I’m off to buy dulux trade white emulsion, it’ll be more enjoyable that dealing with this shit.

  • They don’t match once dried? Obvs you’ve given it a shake and stir etc… I’ve never had two or more pots completely off colour but there is always the squeaky bum time before it dries.

  • Nah, defo off. And yeah good shake etc.

  • ‘Feature wall/s’

  • The back of our house is now a light blue instead of a dusty green for this same reason.
This was using Crown paint, in a named Crown colour, mixed at a Crown decorators centre...

  • Paint mixing can go fuck itself from now on!
Have also prob wasted three or more hours of my life on this.
On the flip side the next pot won’t be satin.

  • I HATE not buying readily available colours. We have only ever been disappointed getting colours mixed.

And another vote for Zinsser AllCoat for masonry.

  • It’s Zinsser that I’ve bought!

  • Pretty much.

  • Who mixed it for you?

  • Chapel interiors. Have phoned and emailed.

  • I'm assuming damp?

Been taking wallpaper off that I'm guessing has been here 20 years or so. It largely comes off in huge chunks as appears it's been painted over a handful of times (true all over, not just in this section)

There's this worrying section here though.

I'm guessing damp and I'm guessing it's because it's adjacent to the bathrooms.

Is there any way of diagnosing the underlying issue and if it's already been addressed?

  • Wallpaper paste has anti fungal stuff init, by which I mean it's a know place for mould to thrive, instantly I wouldn't blame the bathroom (getting one side of a wall a bit damp shouldn't really seep through). You're on the upper floor? windows look good (uPVC?) pattern on the original paper and the bother of over painting suggests its much older than 20years or forma rental, plaster however looks much newer..

  • Interesting, thanks.

It's a house rather than flats, this picture is the ground floor (left on the floorplan)
The grouting and stuff looks fine but I have no idea when anything was installed or when this happened.

The previous owner had lived here since 1980.

  • I read the image as top floor because of the view from the window, so the most aggressive mould has an exterior wall (to the left of the window)

  • There's perhaps about 6 inches of exterior wall to the left of the window, the really dark bit will be interior (onto the cloakroom toilet which is tiled so can't see much there).

  • Without knowing what way the sun shines and all that, I had wanted to say its a warm window cold wall thing and check the gutters don't piss (for want of a better word) down the exterior corner in heavy rain.. but definitely get rid of the mildew and see how it drys -

  • It doesn't get a lot of light down there..

I've seen HG Mould Spray recommended on here before, I'll give that a go.

The plaster adhesion seems okay but there are a couple of dead spots so I'm expecting I need to redo that area

  • HG Mould Spray

I've recommended that before (used for its speed and power) - it got said vinegar (white spirit vinegar) would be better. they'll be paper paste residue to get off first

  • Do the exterior walls have cavities?
If 'yes', debris bridging the cavity could have allowed very slight leaks through the external mortar to reach this wall.
Any evidence under the bath of a previous slight leak, (discolouration of floor boards)?

Is the detail above the window properly sealed?
Builders have remarkable faith is the waterproofness of site mixed sand/cement mixtures.

How old is the property? Back in the day wallpaper paste was any source of cellulose/starch and out of date flour was used.
