The purple is cabinets for the aforementioned books and storage.

Can't really read from the drawing what's happening in the bottom right corner though? Window in a cavity wall?
I also reckon the steel columns are probably staying there where they are planned, but why? The walls can't bear the load? Why not just make the columns from brick or concrete inset in the walls and lay the beams on them? They're really dividing up the space right now.
