NFL salary cap jumps up by 30+ million, good news for teams wanted to keep their free agents, KC, SF etc, who may have had to bite the bullet and let someone "really really good" go to be cap compliant. All those making free agent rankings will be pissed, as they'll have to rewrite immediately, and the dynamics of where free agents could go/ will they stay/ who can afford them, have all changed..
Athletic report by Mike Lombardi below..
The NFL’s salary cap for the 2024 season will be a record $255.4 million per team, the league said Friday, taking a massive $30.6 million leap from the 2023 number.
The increase is the largest the NFL has ever seen.
The new $255.4 million cap for 2024 is 13.6 percent larger than the 2023 cap of $224.8 million. The league also saw a big increase from 2021 ($182.5 million) to 2022 ($208.2 million), but that jump was more of a recovery following the unprecedented COVID-19-induced cap reduction of 2021.
The 2024 cap is simply the result of a prolific revenue spike — the league cited an “extraordinary increase in media revenue” for next season. And it seems to have caught many observers by surprise.
The cap-tracking website Over The Cap initially projected a salary cap of just $242 million for this season. In recent days, Pro Football Talk reported a number approaching $250 million might be possible. But $255.4 million was not on the media’s radar.
The jump is nearly equal to the salary cap 30 years ago. The cap for the 1994 season was $34.6 million.
