  • Simply not possible, sorry.

  • I was thinking about this yesterday in that so much of the guitar music I love is not really based in blues but I still go back to the bluesrawk thing as a default. Weird.

Yep, very much this. My guitar playing is a bit of a three headed monster, the Marshall on 11 rock'n'roll shredder, the sensitive power pop arpeggio guy and the noisy art rocker. It's a bit of a split personality. 😵‍💫

  • Probably some cowboy chords finger picking, Kurt Vile vibes.

But inevitably then some sort of pentatonic noodle in key of A.

I'm actually going through electric guitar grades now to give my playing structure.

I could never afford it as a nipper and I was always pushed as a kid into capitalism rather than creativity and arts (immigrant things). Also exam attainment helps with my ADD and gives me a sense of progress and learning new things / styles.

But I like to play different styles.

  • Anyone played a Gibson LP R7?

  • I've picked one up and plinked it unplugged alright. They're really nice but there are some other incredible guitars at that price point unless you simply must have a Gibson (I'm not anti-Gibson but presumably your talking about a budget of c.£4k+ which really opens up the options)?

  • What was neck like?

  • I think the one I tried had quite a beefy neck but not sure if they would all have the same neck or it would depend on the specific guitar as they're all hand made so may vary slightly. Definitely not a dainty neck though.

  • And while we're on that subject. I kinda have a love/hate relationship with Gibson TV, every now and then it's okay but mostly it's bloody awful.

Their teaser ads are normally total pish but I think this is fantastic. 🤩

  • Love it. Can't wait to buy a Jimmy Page signature double-neck to play... [checks notes] Link Wray on.

  • It's funny and a bit naff, not sure if that was intentional or not, but I really like it!

  • First thing I'll usually play is an upstrummed Em as in I'm Only Sleeping - it's a way to check tuning as much as anything!

Very much feel this. Started playing listening to It's Alive at 13, then learned solos from AC/DC, blues and GnR, then finally discovered Yo La Tengo, Mogwai and MBV.

Even the stuff I haven't listened to in years is still there somewhere and I actually quite like that!

  • ...childs bass recomendations in other guitar thread

Thanks for the replies in the other thread. The Mustang looks really good, white really is the best Fender colour.

The Danelectro I suspect might be a bit different looking - I'll wave it past her though, internet suggests about 6.5 lbs, seems a great weight for the price

  • You can't go wrong with a Mustang either TBH, great little basses. I would never have bought a Longhorn normally but it came up on MarketPlace for $300, couldn't resist. Very happy I bought it cuz it's on everything I record and sounds brilliant.

  • On an electric it would be a mixed major/minor pentatonic run up and down in A trying to fit in a few Chris Buck-style bends/slides. Alternatively a bit of funk around an E9.

On an acoustic I almost always do this
    sooner or later

  • Anyone here tried Monty's pickups?

Not spending 400 quid on Bareknuckles lol

  • I have a Monty humbucker-sized P90 in my Telecaster. Sounds good to me.

  • I didn’t realise Bareknuckles had become so expensive!

I haven’t tried Monty’s, but Creamery are still a relative bargain for some great pickups. He has the order book closed at the moment, but it should be open again soon.

  • Does anyone in here check the resistance on a pair of pickups, hoping for a close match?

Following up on my issue with a set of P-Rails from a while ago, I now have a replacement pair. The last lot measured (after being told to do this) 18.2 and 12.5 (ohms @ 20k), so a chunky variation. The new set have clearly been returned in the past (solder on one of them), and measure 10.5 and 12.5. So, proportionally still quite different.

I think I'll just fit them and see but I am a bit bored of pulling PUs in and out of my guitar.

Edit - FB group just solved the thing for me, and it is just a case of me being a moron. my whole problem stemmed from the fact that I'd accidentally fitted the neck PU in the bridge and v/v. I didn't realise bridge needed to be higher output to match the neck

  • You do want the bridge pickup to be hotter as the strings' vibration is far more pronounced over the neck pickup than the bridge, ie towards the middle of the string. So if you were to install a pair of pickup with the same output, the bridge would be noticeably quieter.

The ohm reading doesn't in itself speak of a higher output pickup but in effect usually does, as more turns=higher resistance (for example) and more turns also appen to produce a higher output pickup.

  • ah, thanks - got in just before my edit. Yeah I'm just an idiot basically.

  • Thinking about adding a Hot Rod Deluxe to the collection?

    Thoughts?
