You don't need a smart trainer but it does let you do the computer game stuff like Zwift, Rouvy etc. Trainerroad is very training-specific and has AI stuff for calculating threshold etc. Not sure if Wahoo Systm is still a thing but it has complementary video stuff like yoga and circuits.
All of them them will work with the Core so I would just trial them and see what works for you.
As with anything fitness related, quality work little and often will get you a long way so pick an UI you think will be sustainable in the long term.

I’m looking at buying the Wahoo Kickr Core. I have an iPhone, no laptop or tablet.
