Can you not just use a triple crankset with the chainrings on the middle and inner rings? Maybe not the most aesthetically pleasing.

Will a standard shimano front mech be ok with such a big drop between chainring sizes? ie from 46 to 30?

Like @Josh says, a triple set up as a double with a double (road) front derailleur works perfectly.

I’m using the Spa triple as a double (42/26) with a modern 105 front derailleur and it shifts great. Bonus points for the integrated barrel adjuster.

where do you put the outer? in the place of the middle presumably with that number of teeth on the inside? about to do this on the tandem with triple deore fr mech x2 chinook chainrings, and LX integrated brake shift thingies, all 9spd, and thinking a 40t wide range cassette on the back
