I have a triple with 2x set up on middle and inner, 42t to 22t and it shifts absolutely fine (shimano rsx and Campag veloce 10spd shifter) actually smooth even despite the internet saying you shouldn't have more than a 16t gap between ratios etc etc

the "bintage" version is the fc-mc34. originally a triple but with the inner mounted to a custom middle ring - now a 94bcd double, e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196176887594

Can you not just use a triple crankset with the chainrings on the middle and inner rings? Maybe not the most aesthetically pleasing.
Will a standard shimano front mech be ok with such a big drop between chainring sizes? ie from 46 to 30?
