Get a Max Bill or a second hand Nomos with California dial
-
Some variant of a max bill? Very unfussy , slim, 34 and 38mm versions. Almost right angle lugs. Sapphire version if the plexiglass isn't your thing
2nd had Nomos (tangente, Orion etc), or Stowa Antea ?
Or an older grand Seiko 9F quartz, like some of the early sbgx or sbgs models. Dressy, well finished, some only 6mm thick. 400-600 on eBay / chrono24 etc.
I want to like this watch.
A lot of the time I find the logos and lettering on men's watches rather garish. Timex may be the best out there, by just typing out their name in a plain no bullshit font. It's perfectly circular with lugs sticking out at an (almost) right angle. And I'm no snob, if a cheap watch would do the job then all the better.
But then there's the shiny finish that would look more at home on a bathroom fixture, and the 13mm thickness that kind of defeats the purpose of the otherwise rather dressy look. To Timex' credit the website also shows a sideways photo to demonstrate the thickness. Presumably to lessen the rate of returns?
The search for a dress watch below 1K continues.
