Iain Bank's 'The Bridge'
It's inspired by the Forth Rail Bridge, so just imagine a much bigger version with accommodation, defensive armaments, different level rail decks etc built into the structure.

How are you finding the book in general? I probably read it about 10 years ago and remember really liking it. I've always found him a bit hit and miss though.
