• The S50 arrives tomorrow. ⏳

  • You got one?! I await your feedback and results with interest!

  • I'm looking forward to it arriving very much, we get pretty dark skies here so hoping for good results.

  • Here we go. 🙃

  • ooooooh exciting stuff. looking forward to seeing the results

  • Ohh very exciting . Thinking you do not live central London :)

  • If you're referring to light pollution, I've seen really great images on the Seestar at Bortle 7!

  • Road trip to the outback ??

  • It's pretty dark where we are, I can go down the road to the beach and set it up there. Dark as, bro!

  • I forgot to post that I've got a new toy too! Xmas present from the missus!

    Thanks @mmccarthy!

(only issue is I have no idea how it works)

  • Nice one!

Thankfully it's a pretty simple little telescope (obviously the mount isn't the stock one, but it's still an alt-az mount so should behave just like the stock dobsonian mount, with the added benefit of not having to crouch down to look into the eyepiece!)

You'll want to fully extend the two little arms there as that sets the focal length. The eyepiece holder is also pretty simple as it just screws in and out to adjust focus.

Is the finder scope on there? It's a little red dot sight, should attach very close to where the eyepiece is. First thing to do is to align that so you can easily find more faint objects. Best thing to do is point the scope at something big and obvious like the moon, get it centred in the view of the actual telescope, then set the finder scope alignment so it's right in the centre of what you're looking at (there's 3 little wheels on the finder scope, one for switching on the light, and the other two are for horizontal and vertical alignment).

Anyway, feel free to ping me if you have any questions!

  • Bortle 7 - I had to google that . Love
to see a Milky Way photo from your new toy- if it can go that wide - can you even easily photo graph something as large as Milky Way - hmm..

  • But the Milky Way is across the whole sky, you can photograph it with any wide angle lens.

  • I know that, but wondered whether the lens was wide enough in that see star to get a good image, imagine it just be though..

  • It has a tiny field of view (1.29º x 0.73º) so wouldn't be able to capture the Milky Way in one frame (but it can get the sun or the moon very neatly into a frame, I guess it was designed to be able to do this) but it is possible to tile images to create a larger image. I'll be looking into doing that too!

Really wanted to unbox and try it out last night but it was stormy and windy (and hot AF) here so not the best conditions.

  • You rock! Cheers buddy! I'll definitely need help.

  • This looks great, Iain!

  • Is the finder scope on there?

There is, but he broke the attachment but added a magnet, so need to see if it works as it should. Probably does

one for switching on the light

    A light???

  • Cheers Joe 🙂

Yours looks amazing. What's the current update??? We're all hanging on in baited breath.

  • It's been cloudy ever since it arrived. Rain forecast for the next two days and then we've got the remnants of a tropical cyclone over the weekend and into next week.

I obvs picked the wrong week to buy a telescope. 🤡

That said, it's clear now so I'm hoping to get it out in an hour or two if it stays like this. 🤞

  • A little red dot should appear in the sight.

There's a dial on the side of the finder scope that rotates around 180 degrees and clicks into place (switched off when the white dots are next to each other). It's sort of like a little dimmer switch for the red dot sight.
