  • guys none of you ride as much or as hard as hippy and andyp, internet bikes are fine for 30 miles a week

rim brakes of all kinds can fuck off if you actually ride your bikes

  • Yes, admittedly, cantis probably aren't going to be the best for ultra hard-beasts doing thousands of miles at a time and sleeping in hedges, but different brakes for different needs and all that. Some people probably benefit from the simplicity of fixing it for the type of riding they do.

The idea that rim brakes (that served people well for decades) suddenly don't work because Shimano said so makes as much sense as saying riding bikes off road started with gravel in 2015.

  • I accept that there is a spectrum of people who ride bikes for 5 miles a week (me) and 200 miles a week but I refuse to accept that either end of that spectrum cannot benefit from hydraulic disc brakes.

Sure you can lie to yourself that inferior braking is underbiking or they look cool or some other romanticism, but they are shit

People who rode rim brakes and now ride disc brakes know that the past was terrible, like having scurvy in victorian times

  • ^ I have been so radicalised post DBAD

  • Rim brakes are horribly simple, just like a bike should be. That’s what I like about them.

  • sure maintenance is a thing in comparison to rim brakes but it comes at a trade off of better braking in all conditions and can use carbon rims

  • We need people like Amey so the rest of us can buy up amazing 2010s rim brake framesets for next to nothing.

  • And if you don’t ride carbon wheels, a decent rim brake could be all you need.

Nobody is disputing disc brakes brake better, but I agree they are not a necessity (for everybody). But they probably will benefit the average rider, yes.

  • Hydro discs just need new pads, same as rim brakes. If anything, my disc pad changes are quicker than rim pad changes. I did the rim brake pads on a friends bike recently and forgot how filthy that gets. I do like the ability to just grab the caliper and yank it straight though. Adjusting disc brake calipers is more faff but still pretty simple. Rim brakes are easier to see you're about to die, disc brakes hide it from you more. My missus manages to wait until the levers are into the bars on rim and disc bikes though so I think that's just personal laziness and both systems suffer.

Well, this is more fun than debugging someone else's shitty app.

  • If you have mechanical disc brakes, have a fucking word with yourself. You may as well have stayed with rod brakes and you disgust everyone.

    :-*

  • I feel seen.

  • lol

I’m flattered to be mentioned in the same sentence as @hippy when it comes to riding a lot, but the reality is very different.

  • why was i left off of the lfgss hitters list?

  • :D

This is NOT a safe space. I repeat, this thread is NOT a safe space!

    :D

The sneering face of the 1% :(

  • I feel quite disgusted with myself for skipping the last two days, like some kind of... (pukes a little) normal person.

  • 1% is how much effort I have to put in braking compared to mech discs.

  • 1% is also the braking power of my canti/vee 'cross bike compared to literally any other bike I own.

  • It's also the percentage of braincells lost on every visit to this thread.

  • and the amount of work I'm getting done relative to what I should be doing whilst here.

  • I think it's time for a lunch break... someone has gone a bit loopy

  • 1% is how much effort I have to put in braking compared to mech discs.

    LOL

The reality is I just want Sram Red 22 mechanical forever and (more importantly) have a horrible track record when it comes to bleeding hydro that also involves being shouted at by my wife.

  • Brakez r death
