    The previous year, I had dropped from 90 to 81 within 3 months, but then put it all back on again plus extra over the rest of the year.

    That first hard dieting exercise helped, insofar as it helped me understand how much I was eating.

    But, it was mentally exhausting. I love my food, and I love cooking, and trying to come up with new meals every day, and restricting the calories in them left me wiped out. Even a weekly cheat day (no calorie counting, but also no splurging) only went so far.

    Once I hit my target, I had no exit strategy, and just went back to eating too much.

    Last year, all I did was keep an eye on portions, for which the previous diet had given me a better eye, and limited snacks on chocolate and crisps.

    Let's see if that works again.
