Don’t sweat it, it’s very much a social event and a way to work off some of the festive period excesses. There might be a few people at the front of the race taking it seriously, but the rest of the field won’t be.
Added: for a lot of people it’s their first race or the only race they do all year, so abilities are very mixed.
