Just finished this one here in the UK 🥹 Bit of a dream-come-true, thanks to cyclesheme and The Woods... Rides as nicely as I'd heard in the stories from across the Atlantic.

I will be swapping out the brakes though as those old 857306931 ["100% cotton high-pile corduroy, Elasticated waist w/ integrated belt , Dropped and gusseted crotch , Hand pockets , Welted zip back pockets, Large snap fastening scoop pockets, Zipped utility thigh pocket, Attachment loop , Fixed turn ups , Regular fit, choose your usual size "] TRUE linkage things develop play and squeal so, so badly. Shiny new shimano DXR ones on the way...

yeah, the brake levers are ace, those brake arms not so much - I think the later models (m960?) suffer less from that problem - but DXR will be great & sidestep the whole thing. Is the derailleur rapid-rise for maximum nerd points?

Yes I love the levers, very nice shape for the fingers. Still not sure what the little adjustable thing inside the housing does though? Maybe you can enlighten me...

This one is not a rapid rise no. I would like to try that type at some point. Grant seems pretty set on it and who am I to argue?

is it a reach adjustment? not sure I've ever used it as I have long-ish fingers, but...

I didn't think it was. Thought that the little allen adjuster in the usual place was for that. Will have to find an old manual online or something...

Woah, this is superb! Love it all, including the Carradice (?) and the RSF sticker on the downtube. Can attest that rapid rise with friction is the bees knees; one of those things that doesn't seem worth the change and then you do it and everything else (friction wise, at least) feels inferior.

Did The Woods tempt you with tubeless or are you tubed as Grant intended?

Edit: Also, is that a glow-in-the-dark Nalgene? One of my best ever purchases for camping as you can always find your bottle in a dark tent without resorting to head torch!

Yes, that's a Carradice audax bag I think? Just a nylon thing. Nothing special really but has a waterproof membrane I believe. I love friction shifting, I'm a full convert! Will need to try rapid-rise if I ever get my hands on a derailleur.

I'm tubed. I've never tried tubeless. I don't ride this bike daily so I'd worry about sealant pooling up.

Yep, glow in the dark nalgene. I agree, it's a handy thing. Glow in the dark tent guy ropes would be good too!!

ohhhh you mean this? I think it's for fine adjusting the lever feel, and maybe allowing the lever to pull cantis as well as Vs - closer to the pivot is canti (pull ratio changes as you pull), further from the pivot is vee (pull ratio is basically linear). same mechanical principle as the pauls levers with choice of two pivot points.

Looks like a version of servo-wave https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/technologies/component/details/servo-wave-action.html fiddling with the pivot point really does change the brake feel.

Yes that thing! How are you supposed to adjust that when there is that black stopper in place? Are you supposed to remove it??

Ah, found this to be quite useful but still doesnt explain the black block thats in there...

If it's like the Sora ones, there is a little screw on the reverse side; you unscrew it, take the stopper piece out, slide the pivot point up (or down), then replace the stopper piece.

I think the black block is a kind of lawyer-tab-safety-mechanism, i.e. with the block fitted the action of the lever is exactly as specified for a v-brake lever. if you physically remove the block you can then get a lot more customisation/adjustment, but you can also end up with a potentially "unsafe" setup. by which I mean, if you're "racing in a pro mtb race" you can set it up with more power, but if you're a "novice rider with poor brake control" that setting could contribute to an accident.

This is very good. Those are my favourite levers too. Really regret selling a couple of sets at £20 a go before I went to NZ.

I was going to offer up some motolites, but I think covering it with made in the us of a cnc parts has been done to death (and when I checked, they're black, not silver)

Thanks! Motilites are cool and I’d love to try them (but could never justify the price). I’m definitely into the not-being-too-fancy Rivendell philosophy too. Although it is a funny one when the frames are £££. I think that’s why it appeals. It’s all a bit counter-culture.
