  • Cervelo don’t make toothbrushes

  • After going through about 5 Philips Sonicare brushes (They seem to literally vibrate their own electronics to bits) I switched to an Braun/Oral B non-sonic one and it's been absolutely fine. There's a cheap one which only does slow speed - avoid that and go for the fast one.

  • Good to know, thank you. I'll stick to 105 then. The cassette is definitely a bit worn, the chain rings have significantly fewer miles on them due to switching cranksets since I bought the groupset but thought I might as well do the lot at the same time.

  • You might find the rings are fine.

  • Generally your chain wears first, if you change it before it's too worn the cassette will be fine for a few chains, if not then you'll need to do both together, if you leave it way too long you'll wear the chainrings too but the wear usually spread over more teeth than the cassette so it can take longer/more chains.

  • Late to this but if you haven't found a replacement yet i'd suggest trying a driver from one of the working fittings first. Almost all good quality LED fittings are integral/non replaceable as the normal LED lifetime is high. IME it's usually the driver that fails so you may just need to replace that.

Saying that it looks like quite an old/cheaper fitting so you may just want to replace it but i suspect you'd need to do all the fittings that room for it not to look a mess.

  • Yeah I've been through about 4 chains. I've had the same groupset for several years and thousands and thousands of miles and have never replaced the cassette. Maybe I'll get a grown up to give my gears some proper attention and see if that gets them running smoothly again. There's a decent chance that I've just not been able to adjust them to a good enough standard, rather than anything being worn out.

  • Sounds about time for a new chain/cassette then, maybe chainring but I'd probably try without first to see what it feels like if it doesn't look obviously worn, shifting might be due to wear but more likely indexing or in need of a new cable and maybe outer.

  • Had a conversation with a retired engineer from SMEE, about the benefits of cone bearings on bicycles vs. ball bearings.

Has it been done? I presume not at scale because of the stark price differences. My Google-fu might be weak today but my searches come up with motorcycle chat, no bicicycles.

  • Has it been done?

A few headsets, but I'm not aware of anything else. Shimano used cylindrical roller bearings in the BB7700 to take radial loads backed up with smaller than usual ball bearing for axial loads. In general, taper roller bearings don't suit the packaging requirements of bicycles, and offer negligible benefits under the load, speed and durability requirements of bicycle parts.

  • Cone bearings to me mean "cup and cone" which use ball bearings. Do you mean roller / needle bearings like the Stronglight A9

  • I had a vague recollection that Bullseye might have made a taper roller BB, but it turns out it was cylindrical+ball like the Shimano one

  • The chain is relatively new. Only a few months old and I've not done a huge amount of miles since it was replaced. The cables are super cheap but the outers are kind of fancy. Will try replacing both and get someone more competent than me to index. If that doesn't work, new cassette time in spring!

  • If the chain is newish it's probably not the cassette or chainrings as it would've been worse straight away then settled in a bit, probably cables, indexing or hanger.

  • new chain and cassette time in spring!

Don't change the cassette with a used chain.

  • go for a fast oral b one but without the bluetooth bollocks, you dont need an app to use a toothbrush.

some have a pressure indicator and even a power reduction if you go over pressure. this helps reduce wear and tear on heads. (though my previous brush became oversensitive and kept reducing power at normal forces but it was many years old, so i only discovered this when it was replaced.

if you travel a lot find one with a travel case. also watch how to use one, you dont need to do a brushing action as the toothbrush does it for you.

Found myself doing a firmware update on my toothbrush last year, that was a bizarre experience.

  • Did it involve bluetooth?

  • My girlfriend really likes her Suri toothbrush, it's a sonic jobby but seems to never run out of battery, can be had with a UV cleaning case, everything is biodegradable and replaceable/repairable. I've not tried the sonic type and prefer the swirly abrasive industrial ones but I'm not buying another until mine is well beyond dead.

  • Do like mine. I had an issue after one year but they sent me a replacement FOC on the basis that I sent the old one back to be repaired or recycled. Seem like a good company.

  • Bizarre, it is almost the old people commenting that they never updated their toothbrush.

Plus take over, but now wondering what there is to update.

  • Never ever knock Bluetooth

  • Ah, got you! Needs a bit of tweaking by someone who knows what they're doing then. Thanks. As a point of reference, what would be a typical mileage to get out of a cassette and set of chainrings?

  • Only used inside, clean and lubed, I’ve heard of +10,000 km. Used outside year-round in the uk, cleaned and lubed diligently, maybe low thousands of km.

A single muddy, gritty cobbled classic race can easily wear a chain and cassette to the point of replacement.

  • To be honest I have no idea, I bought it, wanted to check out just how ridiculous the app was (it attempts to keep track of which areas of your mouth you've covered and which you haven't, as well as tracking brush times, all a bit useless IMO).

But yeah, required a firmware update first.
