  • Please feel free to spam with pics when he arrives, he is CUTE. What's his name?

  • We’ve called him Winston, he’s currently 8weeks old.
He’s our first red Maine coon.

  • So my "this cat won't stay little" assumption might be true!

  • Gorgeous!

  • And yes, this cat is always hungry.
So now we have a cat that doesn't care about food, and one that's like a furry hoover starting to look like she ate a small football.
Tips for this scenario that don't involve expensive food robots appreciated.

  • i love white socks!

  • we have a cat that doesn't care about food, and one that's like a furry hoover

we have exactly the same! and our black and white cat is the fat furry hoover.

we were told by the vet to put her "on a diet". so now they get a small tin of wet food in the morning, split between two bowls, and then nothing until the evening.

in the evening they get a small cup full of dry food each. the bowls go down for a few hours and we take away anything uneaten before we go to bed.

whilst fat furry hoover isn't getting noticeably thinner, she has stopped putting on weight. she's not too impressed with the new regime though.

recent endeavours include: pushing the "taken away" bowls (which were stacked with the remaining food in the bottom bowl) off the side board to get at the food within.

ripping the paper off a new bag of dry food which had come in the post and was in the hall, then attempting to chew through the plastic packet to get at the food within.

a lot of vocal harassment along the lines of "where is my food you mean bastard?" at the sight of anyone coming into or leaving the kitchen.

    she's a lovely cat, though. :)

Edit - our other cat is entirely unfased by all this and just acts as if nothing is happening. she dips in and gets her food as and when the other one is distracted or temporarily full.

  • We also have his brother from an earlier litter and he is fucking huge.

  • Those are white patent leather slippers, not socks!

  • Found the cat early afternoon after 30h gone! That was tense.

  • Mine is in heat and yowling and presenting. 11 months old. She can't get out so she's got no opportunity to get pregnant. I'll get her spayed when I can, but in the meantime I massage her haunches, which seems to relax her a bit. But it's half way to simulating intercourse with her...all very odd. But subjecting her to forced sterilisation is also odd. I know it's the best option, but I still have qualms about it. It would be interesting to discuss it with her. I wonder what she would say ?

  • Taking care of this little guy the next days.

  • Very cute cat. The beauty spot is incredible!

    Thanks for the tips.
Seems like it's down to really just giving out the food they need and monitoring if both get their share.
We also have the possibility of buying food the hoover does not like. Which is evil but will probably work.
Ours is tiny, and had a complicated fracture on her leg which is the reason she ended up in the shelter. Was 3kg when we got her. We're told she shouldn't get heavier. 3.2 last vet visit. Shouldn't get heavier. 3.4 now 🙄.

  • Ah - sorry to hear about the gamy leg.

Stevie was over 6kg last vet visit. She's not even a large cat.

we have found that the non greedy cat still gets as much food as she wants. probably not exactly her share but she doesn't go hungry and doesn't seem at all bothered. she's not losing weight either (she's a healthy weight though).

    comedy short legs

  • Don't be sorry, she's fine.
She ended up with us after their previous owners couldn't afford the vet after her fall from the 4th floor, so the big Berlin shelter did crazy stuff including metal screws.
And we were looking for a companion for our other cat, saw the funny furry online, and went to get her.
We had a net on the balcony anyway.
Then I also installed a cat safe insect net in one of the windows. 5 minutes later she would have jumped out again...

  • her fall from the 4th floor

Did she land badly? I thought 4th floor falls were supposed to be fairly safe. Mine fell from the 3rd floor and got away with a slight bruise.

  • I have no idea, only thing we learned is that she originally comes from the Netherlands.
I guess fourth floor means ground plus four storeys here, that's at least 13 meters.

The shelter is quite strict, once you can't care for an animal/give it to them it doesn't go back.
But they vetted us, and we even had someone come by and check us/apartment and the cat out.

  • Looks like one of those Japanese dachshund cats!

  • Cats are supposed to survive falling from a great height if they have enough time to right themselves and spread out their legs parachute-style to slow down. Like a flying fox. They still land pretty hard but the elasticity of their tendons etc cushions them.

  • Isn't there evidence, from cats falling from multi story apartment buildings that cats can fall a long way without harm due to low terminal velocity? But at lower storeys it isn't so good?

Edit -article that mentions the article in nature magazine https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1988-05-03-8803130865-story.html

  • There might have been a tree in the way, landed on a fence, who knows.
