  • Cheers @Maj - if anyone gives a flying fuck, I've got an insta going (cos that's what you do now) where I'm just trying to keep track of progress while being highly self-deprecating - https://www.instagram.com/sh1t_m1n1atures

While I'm here, is there any reason not to use a spray can for base coating? So spray primer > spray base coat (yellow, or blue or whatever) > wash > details yada yada?

  • Tried doing a magma effect for the first time. It's a little shiny cos it wasn't fully dry but I'm quite happy with it.
    My hobby IG is sumopaints

the main problem might be the thickness of the spray, it's very easy to get to lose some details. But there's a reason the primer sprays are coloured, just use the one that matches the base colour you want.

  • I can't believe I've never noticed that before... FFS. Cheers!

  • Colourforge sprays are highly recommended and are colour matched to Citadel paints

  • lovely fade to it, and the worn edge sells it

  • Wonder why Warhammer have not collabed with Legos yet? *Cough

  • little different from me, was good fun

used a limeted palette and took some shortcuts

these smaller models really can be done quickly and effectively with contrast paints and layering dry brush effects for highlights/ weathering. process is really enjoyable

from start to finish took aproximately the run time of oceans 11

  • I was so hype for it when it came out and then all the release woes just made me lose all enthusiasm. Tbh I don't have space for this kind of board game in my gaming existence atm but it would be a very fun painting project at some point.

  • Great stuff! Sounds like a really fun event.

  • Sublime. I can't work out if this is satire 🤣

  • No way. Vice loving it 😂

  • Really happy with how this genestealers atv came out, the blue/ red really sets it off

    Also some aggressors I finished

  • Tamiya panel liner. Game changer. It feels like cheating.

  • Gundam do similar afaik

  • Good stuff in here recently. Keep it coming!

Brushes: Are the posh sable ones worth it? I'm naturally relucatant to ask for anything expensive but my mum wants to give me something for xmas and it might as well be something I'll use so was thinking a nice brush and some brush soap so I can look after it.

Currently I use a set from amazon that cost about £7 which do ok but there are times when I find a brush that held its shape better, kept the nice point, or held more paint might be useful.

Looking at Windsor and Newton and they are significantly more for a single brush. If they are a "look after it and it'll last for your grandkids to use" type quality then I can see the value.

  • I'd also like to know about this. Spent £3.50 on a set from The Range and they're doing me fine, but do wonder if a better set would make much improvement.

  • Yeah I like them, but keep them for the neat stuff. W&N Series 7 is often recommended but frankly is silly money. I like these
    https://www.handover.co.uk/series-66-handover-pure-sable-watercolour-brush-medium-hair/
    and
    https://www.scalemodelshop.co.uk/kolinsky-sable-triangular-brush-no-01-cml-cml3355-01-p6595/

Keep some cheap brushes for base layers, contrast paints, dry brushing etc but I use a size 0 or 1 from either of those 2 for nearly everything. I like the AS Handover ones in particular as they are slightly longer than most so hold more paint. And generally be aware of brush keeping tips, not getting paint in the ferrule, getting some brush soap for cleaning and that.

  • I personally wouldnt buy expensive ones for warhammer, the ones they sell in cass art will be good for water based paints. I use them for similar paints.

  • Artis opus brushes are very good in my limited experience of them. And good brushes are definitely a take care of them and they will last a very long time. So even though they're a bit more to start with, it's worth it over time.

I have 1 nice brush that I use for highlights, but do all of my basecoating with bulk acrylic brushes.

  • As someone who has painted a handful of minis and is relatively new, ymmv

I think the jump from Amazon brushes to say, £4 single brush, was noticeable and worth it in how it keeps a point and cleans up, more than enough for my skill level.

I’d say, from friends reviews and a large consumption of media that this scales with the £15 posh brushes. They’re nice, clean up nice and hold lovely points.

But I think what’s important to keep in mind is your brush care. If you don’t have the muscle memory to clean brushes, use different ones for metallics, change water regularly, switch between them for different tasks, keep a nice one for edge highlighting etc. you will be shocked how fast you throw £15 away

personally, I won’t be buying the luxury ones until I feel I can not destroy them through forgetfulness , and maybe find the limits of the brushes I have now.

But you might be a much better cleaner and painter

  • Painted this fun one today, or rather based it
