  • Probs give it a clean whilst you're under there. How old is your machine? I'm worried about mine now 😬

  • $200 + GST for the fitting service by the La Marzocco agent here, so $573 for kit and fitting, plus the GST of 8%, or buy that kit from Malaysia and fit it myself.

I quite want to fit it myself, but I'm still waiting for a response on the warranty.

  • It'll void the warranty. I might do it anyway.

  • How old is your machine?

Fifteen years old. Used daily but only for a couple of shots. Second gasket. I do clean it and descale it pretty regularly but have got pretty lax of late. Feel like I should strip the whole thing down and do it justice but who's got the time for that?

  • My wife & daughter recently went away for a week to visit the in-laws. Was the only realistic way I was ever going to get enough spare time and fully service the machine.

  • Has anyone here done the capacitor swap on a Wilfa Svart grinder before to fix the known problem?

I've acquired one which needs it doing, would anyone be up for doing it for me?

Happy to pay in beers/cash/fancy beans!

  • I usually order coffee from Dark Arts, Origin or Full Court. Anywhere else I should try?

  • Yellow Bourbon!

    Thank you, on the list!

  • Has anyone done any form of official training with a coffee shop/roaster ? I know some run workshops. I'm interested in the business side as well as being a hands on barista. Basically I'm thinking about doing a mobile set up at some point as there is a big gap down here in wild Wiltshire and looking for some workshops to do over official certification and interested if anyone has done something similar.

Really I'm just looking for an excuse to convert an old land rover.

  • I did training a long time ago with Square Mile. Looking back on it, I'm sure you could get a similar amount of knowledge from YouTube these days.

I'm not sure how useful it would be going to a place, depending on the knowledge you already have, but we were fortunate to get them to come to us as part of an install.

It sounds obvious but what was really beneficial was having someone else showing the "proper" outcome on the machine we were using, and then being able to replicate that with feedback.

  • That is a good point, I probably have a good base.

If I find a good supplier, I think they would offer product training, I'd also most likely rent a machine which should also come with training.

I always find it fascinating how businesses selling mediocre coffee thrive but maybe the majority of people just don't care about quality. Totally different experience in Australia, everyone gives a shit.

  • Have you chosen your bean supplier? Usually that's a good place to start because they have an interest in making sure your output is up to the right standard.

  • Non electric goosenecks, talk to me.

Never been bothered about them before but we've ditched our kettle for an all in one hot and cold water dispenser thingy. All good for the clever dripper but need some thing for v60s now.

Shall I just get the Hario Buono? All black painted ones look nice but surely the paints just gonna flick off. Is the fellow stag worth the extra dollar?

  • I'd go stagg. I have the hario and it's very drippy and annoys me

  • Dark Horse Coffee/Horsebox Coffee in Oxfordshire do barista courses and roasting courses. I've been on an introduction to Roasting course they ran and it was really worthwhile!

  • I realise we're talking small samples sizes here, but I've had the Buono (not painted) for a good few years and no drips from mine. No experience with the Stagg though.

Are you going to be going from hot water dispenser, to kettle, to V60? Might be worth checking if you'll be losing too much temperature when doing that (no idea on the magnitude of the effect to be honest, I heat mine on a hob)

  • It will be hot water dispenser to kettle but I can just bang it on the hob straight after if its an issue. I tested the clever dripper temp with kettle and dispenser and it was only couple of degrees lower from the dispenser, makes zero difference to the coffee.

V60 only gets used when we've got people round and I need to make for more than just me and my wife. Can the Hario and Stagg be used on induction and gas? We've got gas in the place we're renting but when we buy a place we'll be getting induction so I'd rather not buy something I'll have to replace in a year.

  • A different suggestion, a v60 drip assist and just pour directly from your hot tap.

  • Buono is good for gas & induction (I've got induction and no issues here), Stagg looks to be good for gas but not induction (at least going by the description here: https://fellowproducts.com/products/stagg/)

  • I have a copper Stag I’d like to give a new home. Also pretty sure I’ve used it on our induction but I can check when I’m home.

  • I might have taken you up on the offer but I'm in France.

  • Stagg looks to be good for gas but not induction (at least going by the description here:

Yeah, loads of conflicting stuff online for the stagg, seems to work on some induction hobs but not others.
