FWIW I think you're right, but I also think there's diminishing returns at work here, and you can achieve the same result with a LOT less. While working for a uni during the pandemic I had the best AV setup in my team with a Logitech C270 work had (begrudgingly) bought for me (after much pestering) because I had a global role and a £25 Amazon Basics condenser mike I bought myself for family Zoom calls.

What I don't get is surely you're at the mercy of the other person's system?

If their speakers are average, or the connection is average, surely you're going to be average?

When I see me on my screen, my image looks sharp af. 80% of the time everyone else has the sheen of a 2010 camera phone.

Also is it not probably one of those things where if you know someone senior has gone hard on something, you're not going to mug them off. Instead you'll enthusiastically agree that it's great and definitely worth it.

Had two slipped discs and lockdown turbo wasn't good for them, got really bad sciatica and foot drop and had to have a lumbar microdistecomy.

When the surgeon opened it up one of the discs had punched a hole in the lining of my spinal cord. He patched me up with paper and glue (his words) and I got five days flat bed rest, but pain went straight away and it's all been good since.

Fuck. Glad things are better now. Do you mind me asking, was this an issue of poor core being exacerbated by turbo, bike fit, holding too long in one posture, some pre existing condition?

You can tell if someone has a decent mic and good lighting will help a lot with small-sensor webcams but I can only assume some kind of DSLR is in use to get to £10k…
Stream-deck, lighting, audio interface and broadcast quality mic could be achieved <£1k.

Still, for a lot of companies it would be a hard sell and the tech support would be a nightmare.

But yes, a DSLR as a webcam, actually 2 of them when I'm recording webinars as I consciously try and film to minimise direct eye contact as it makes others more comfortable and at ease, so I offset one slightly and slightly zoomed out... Kinda imagine a slightly panned out shot of a newsreader Vs a close up of the newsreader.

The other part of the cost is the speakers on the desk. A lot of people have good mics, these make the audio equipment seem transparent.

Given the existence and activity of the watch thread, and car thread, other forums would be created long before anything about home working setups. People are into way more obsessive things, and spenny things, than I am.

At least I use all of this virtually every day, 30-35 hours of meetings per week, and the computer on for at least 10 hours per day. It amortises well. Those last thread words are eminently quotable for this thread.
