  • Don't damage the flooring in your house, do it outside :)

  • ah, i’m officially old!!!

  • i only remember porcupines in that beige-grey. I just slip slided all over the place on ritcheyz-maxs, kona‘s own efforts, marin’s, admittedly not terrible, smoke dart rip/offs (quakes?). The guy in front inevitably had 1.5” conti cross country’s and was slicing.

  • @Maj

It's worth checking that the crown race and fork have the correct dimensions to achieve an interference fit as required.

From experience, if the fork is oversized and needs facing, you can use the @PhilDAS method but all you'll achieve is an experience of frustration, tinnitus (I recommend putting some earplugs in) and eventually taking it to a shop where they'll face the fork for you.

  • Save yourself all these problems and just cut it.

  • There's no fork in existence that a CK crown race goes on easily. The above method has been necessary and worked on dozens of brand new forks from Columbus, Enve, Fairlight, handmade, etc

  • just cut it.

    I refuse to believe this.

    The 'just' part.

    just own a vice
    just own a cutting tool
just own a crown race tool
    just cut it

    No.

    Where does just stop?
just buy tubes from Ceeway and make a bike?
just start a global bike brand and make your groupsets?

  • Agreed, and I don't mean to imply there's anything wrong with the method. Quite the opposite, it's how I would do it.

Just wanted to note that the CK headset comes with instructions specifying the correct dimensions and if the fork crown is oversized it'll need facing first. Or at least that facing it will reduce the frustration level.

  • Just mine the iron ore first.

  • Yeah you're right, I'm being flippant but obviously if it was too big, it also wouldn't go on easily :)

That said, I'm sure Mads would have ensured it was spot on.

  • there previously was a ck crown race on there

but like....im not sure i will get this one on before i get evicted due to a noise complaint

even with the upside down method! it's nay budging but i think that's because i'm made of matchsticks

  • Indeed. In Mads we trust.

  • I had forgotten the bike was previously assembled for the show.

You can always just find a local shop who will fit the crown race for £5-10.

  • Now Onza Octopus, that was a classic 90s tyre.

    "Puck, puck, puck..."

  • tfw you buy the tool but what you need is actually 4-6 years experience and a good upperbody work out routine

  • Things I’ve decided a (trusted) shop does for me: anything Headset related that isn’t just tightening a threaded one, installing / shortening hydro hoses, wheel building.

  • I guess it stops with buying the specific tool that still ends up not doing the job and ends up in deflated emotions.

I do like to make things easy on myself mind you.

  • There is a man in my life called Rob. He has a combination of dad strength and Hungarian farmer strength. I spent a good chunk of my lunch break trying to get a very stuck cog off of a hub. He just glared at it for a bit, then gave the chain whip a quick tug and it came flying off. Everyone should have a Rob in their life.

  • Can I dibs the Park Tool ‘Rob’ five-speed block remover please (can’t find the product code right now) as all my sockets appear to be made of cheese

  • I had good success once with heating a stubborn (non CK) crown race in the oven to about 250° while putting the steel fork in a large freezer overnight. I was then effortlessly able to slide the crown race right onto the fork with the help of a pair of tongs.

  • Split the crown race

  • Commission a bespoke headset for this bike from Phil Wood.

  • Split the fork crown.

  • You just need a deli slicer, 20 years experience as a butcher, a meat press, and you could be flipping ham.
