It's a common misconception that businesses need to regularly make 'profit', they just need to have enough cashflow to service debt and keep the beans moving around. Many big service businesses in particular like Virgin Media rarely make a formal 'profit'.
Also remember that once you make profit, you pay tax on it, so many big businesses choose to ride close to the line or fiddle the money around internationally.
