  • I'm playing OTB on Monday, it could be a disaster as I'm struggling to beat the 700 bot as I'm so puzzle focused.

  • @mashton I think I just sent you a challenge on chess.com. This wasn’t totally deliberate since the app recommended you as a past opponent and I just accepted thinking you were challenging me. Nevertheless, very happy to play and I’m sure you'll smash me if your rapid rating is anything to go by!

  • How did it go? Nowadays I struggle to visualise a real physical board I’ve become so used to the 2d version.

  • I was 1-1 with my buddy which is rare as he is very strong player, he overcomitted an attack in game 2 and I managed to promote a pawn which was a winning move.

I then played one of the regulars, I lost the first as black to a blitz type attack, then the return game I sacrificed my queen to setup a king chase that I eventually finished off.

It was fun, hopefully more of the regulars will play us too next time in a couple of weeks.

Visualising the board was very hard, also too many 2d puzzles isn't good prep for playing.

  • Accepted. Let's play!

And I definitely won't thrash you, I didn't play for about a year and am now garbage!

  • I don't think I could ever have solved this, it is such a nice finish though.

Can you solve the daily chess puzzle? Good luck! https://www.chess.com/daily-chess-puzzle/2023-11-12

  • Great name, too!

  • I got myself in this position last night. I think I won

  • Can anyone help identifying these pieces? I think they’re Russian but beyond that I’m at a a loss

  • I had a very similar set years ago but they were German

  • Ah interesting. My dad gave me these for my eighteenth birthday twenty one years ago and I remember him saying they were from an antiques shop, and that they were Russian. Sadly he’s not around anymore to ask

  • Most likely are Russia the ones I had were of that style with some differences great pressie

  • Does anyone know if there's a physical board that can connect to Chess.com that will relay your moves to an online game, and physically move the opponent's pieces when they move? If so I'm buying it right now. If not, can someone please make it happen?

A DGT smart chess board. Whoever knew there was such a thing? Every day is a school day

  • I was looking at those while trying to find what I was after, before I posted here. But from what I saw on YouTube you still have to move the opponent's piece which makes it pretty redundant IMO. I want to sit at the table with no laptop, press a "start new 10 min game" button and play as if someone was there with me.

  • it exists!

I can’t play otb anymore. The pieces all look funny and I miss obvious moves.

  • Ooh, spendy. And a bit clunky looking. But yeah, it does the thing. Shame that there isn't more demand for these so that they can make them good.

  • My hope was that this would be the first of many and that people would start developing cheaper alternatives. I’d love one.

I think I saw someone make a homemade one on YouTube but iirc he had trouble with the static pieces getting in the way. For example if you moved a knight on the opening move it would just barge through the pawns pushing them out of the way.

  • This is exactly what I want, and nowhere near as good as it needs to be yet. But it's very cool. Nice to know that I'll be able to get a good one eventually. I play chess every day on chess.com but don't like having to do it through a laptop.
