Lots of cheap stuff at Evans seemingly. Small Diverge with 50% off seems reasonable, although I don't love the colourway: https://www.evanscycles.com/brand/specialized/diverge-comp-carbon-2022-gravel-bike-716221#colcode=71622115

Good deal on the Diverge mad that it was 5k in the first place. Went in to my local store yesterday to pick up these which were nearly half price with the 20% extra code. It was depressing apart from the muc off stand and the locks and inner tubes everything else had sale prices in. Loads of e-bikes on sale and one poor fucker on his own in the shop having to cover the till, shop floor and do bike servicing on his own getting shit from customers complaining about the credit note only/no refund policy and another moaning because he had to come back in half an hour to get his pads changed because there was no one else to do it immediately.

Same story in Birmingham city centre...

Yep. How is Evans still limping along?

complaining about the credit note only/no refund policy
This is a big reason why I'll never use a mike ashley brand ever again
-
• #6161
? Credit note only refund policy ?
Even for a right to cancel return within 14 or 30 days of receipt of goods?
I believe trying this on with customers, even if they cave to the savvy, persistent and patient ones, is illegal under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 to mislead a customer about their rights.... . -

Are there any UK retailers that don't have issues right now? Fire sales everywhere.
-
• #6163
i don't think it'll be long before evans is another in store franchise within sports direct stores, much in the same way as game is becoming.

Is this all good or bad news for small indy shops?
-
• #6165
Maybe if it had happened 10 years ago it might have been good justification for the price difference required to sustain an independent store.
I think by now the majority of consumers are so conditioned to cut price online retailers that there is little to no space for independents to survive, even if they had greatly reduced competition

Bad down our way at the moment everything Cycle shack sell is 20-30% off at Evans or Leisure lakes and the Same for Baker st and Rayments but they're trying to complete as best as they can as they've got quite a few bikes 20% off. If you wanted to buy something standard like a mid level bar and stem or find a small selection of cycling shoes even at rrp could you even locally? The stand alone work shops selling a few accessories all see doing OK though. At this rate it won't be long before you won't be able to buy a bike in a shop

I'm glad this has finally come full circle - online shop devouring themselves.
The race to the bottom is just that, under cutting competitors and see who could survive the longest or has deeper pockets. To put it into perspective, sometimes the discount is so steep that it's pretty much cost plus VAT. Of single low single figure margins.
Absolutely bonkers.

cost plus VAT
And the bigger players get distributor prices, which is how the likes of wiggle are able to sell stuff below the trade price available to any local shop.

Evans managers were told to cut staff again and again, leaving them to pick up the slack. Wouldn’t surprise me if that poor fucker you mentioned was the “manager”.
-
• #6172
it's not just online shops though is it?
the high street is looking pretty bare at the moment. -

Just seen this now. I was building a new gravel bike and bought these - they were cheaper than the alu bars I was after! I'm UK-based but mine did arrive and are now on the bike. Tough job internally hoses through these though. Have found other bars way easier.

He was the sales assistant, manager, mechanic, cleaner and security. Probably on a zero hours contract and minimum wage. Said he was only there because he was at Halfords that closed and needed a job. You can't blame the staff for not giving a fuck for what they get paid and how they get treated. Shoplifting in these places is terrible our local Decathlon is massive and it'll have 3-4 staff covering the whole store and has mostly self scan checkouts so is regularly getting looted and are rarely even challenged as if the staff even do notice it's not their problem. It used to have security guards and 3-4x the current staff levels. I'd have thought the security guards would cover their wages if the were even a mild toe rag deterrent

Not surprising is it? Just look at the amount of Asos/Everi return parcels at your local Post Office/Tesco.
The decline of high streets/brick and mortar shops is nothing new, unless you're able to distinguish the products significantly versus online retailers, it's pretty much a lost cause.
Furthermore, as some others have pointed out, most are barely staffed, on minimum or zero hours contracts and can't even give you a proper answer when queried, pretty much no service, makes no difference to buying on line no in terms of the shopping experience?
70% off and should work with the extra20 code they're almost giving these away. In a couple of different well in most sizes. Loads of Endura heavily discounted on there. Discount code ends Monday
