• Technically they should still give you the distance. Unfortunately, most police forces are unenlightened and will just be “they were in their lane”. You could try submitting to see what happens.

  • yeah, it's probably not worth it i guess.
i've just submitted the first one, although still feel a bit weird about it.

  • I definitely felt a bit weird submitting my first video. I’m not a natural “call the cops” type of person. But after the umpteen millionth close pass by some psycho on their phone I finally decided actually fuck these people, I might hate them more than I hate the police.

  • Also it keeps the bizzies too busy to bother your business

  • I wouldn't cycle in that "cycle lane".

  • I was knocked off by an uninsured driver a couple of weeks ago (who then drove off before the police arrived and gave an incorrect phone number). Has anyone got any experience claiming from Motor Insurance Bureau, or using solicitors to pursue a claim? Not sure if its worth all the hassle.

  • Yes I had something very similar a few years back. I had CTC membership so it was all handled through their solicitors. ( I can’t remember who they were but looking it up it was Slater Gordon. It took a while but they dealt with all the paperwork. If it happened again - I’d make sure I took photos of the car and rang the number given on the spot. I had a broken arm so wasn’t thinking straight. Document everything - taxi receipts, hospital appointments and anything work related. I was freelancing at the time and lost a fair bit of work because I couldn’t physically do the job. Get witness reports, police reports any hospital appointments. If you’ve got any Cctv footage that will speed things up. Hopefully you’re ok. But definitely worth pursuing I think even if you have to appoint solicitor yourself. They will either say yes or no based on your circumstances. PM me if you need any more info

  • Thanks very much Nick, that's super helpful.
It's hard to concentrate on getting numbers and details when you're laid out in pain next to a car right?! In my case a (really lovely) witness took the details, but I think was more concerned with checking I was ok.

It seems like such a pain to claim, and in general I am OK -- a couple of days going to hospital appointments, broken helmet, bike seems ok, but I'd like to have checked over, so not huge amounts of money, but still very annoying. I'll definitely drop Slater Gordon a message though FWIW. Thanks again!

  • My pleasure - glad you’re ok and good luck with Slater Gordon.

  • had quite a bad one on the way home last night. overtake straight into oncoming traffic then took a right turn about a hundred metres further on. totally pointless. reported.

  • I had another infuriating conversation with my father at the weekend.
He was speaking with my auntie and apparently my uncle has had a letter from the police because a cyclist sent footage of an incident and they are going to prosecute (not fixed penalty so must have been serious).

Several incredible remarks from their conversation:

    1) He cannot remember even doing it (it was on a drive back from Cornwall)
    2) He is really worried about it because he has so many points he could lose his license
    3) It is wrong for cyclists to have cameras because they are doing the police's job

I was then subjected to the 'cyclists go through red lights' shit.

I am not allowed to argue with my dad anymore because apparently it upsets him.

  • He is really worried about it because he has so many points he could lose his license

That raise more alarm than anything.

  • ^ beat me to it. If he has that many points, his licensed privilege should be removed.

  • Yet the jist of the whole conversation was it is the cyclist's fault and we should all feel sorry for my uncle 'the victim'

  • I did make that point! But....poor old geoff

  • i'd bet most drivers can't remember doing it because it's not a really scary potentially life changing event for them, just another overtake.
point 2 - pretty much proves that he's a crap driver
point 3 - would he not report a crime if it happened in front of him and there were no police around?

i'm sure you put these points across.
sometimes it's just not worth the argument.

    ::edit:: way too slow!

  • He cannot remember even doing it (it was on a drive back from Cornwall)

I don't think this is incredible. If you don't cycle there's a pretty good chance that you don't realise that close overtaking someone at 40mph is really dangerous, you do it to other cars after all.

Education around it is getting better but still really needs to be hammered home. Plenty of drivers are dicks but plenty just don't consider it.

  • as part of the driving test, sit all drivers on a bike and drive past them at 40mph.
the only way is to experience it first hand.

  • Little Venice this morning.
A bike wobbles out in front of the Toyota with the large roof box
