  • but it's absolutely yummy

I've tried it and I definitely didn't think it compared to real hummus, but obviously that's subjective

Rapeseed oil, unless it's organic, will be grown from genetically modified seeds bred to give glyphosate resistance, so that they can be drowned in glyphosate

Unless it's cold press, rapeseed oil is extracted using the poisonous solvent hexane

It also contains the poison, erucic acid, although amounts vary

How much you care about any of that is up to you, but given this industrially produced not-hummus costs more than making it yourself with a good quality olive oil, it seems an odd choice to recommend it in the food thread

  • You know what, there’s not many places that sell square plates anymore, can’t think why.
@dubtap I wish I still lived near a Nisbets so I could see up close some of their vast selection. Weirdly, I’ve made two orders online with them recently and both times they sent part of the order twice. If they do it again I won’t be so honest when returning!

@ELbowloh My son would love those.

@fredtc Thanks, I really like the ‘dolomite’ off white but at £44 a dinner plate I reckon thats out of budget. Plus the hand washing thing is a bit off putting.

    Cheers everyone, I’ll report back

  • The John Lewis Any day range is pretty inoffensive and reasonable quality, even if it won't win any prizes for style.

  • Ha, it’s the precursor range called ‘House’ I’m gunning to replace.

  • Anyone made a shio tare for ramen before? Thought I'd have a crack but realised I don't know what I'm doing. Soaked 12 shitake and a sheet of kombu overnight, took the mushrooms out and heated a bit, removed the kombu and added 150g salt (to 1l). Tastes very mostly of salt but I think there's umami there.

From what I've read I need to add mirin, vinegar and sugar and maybe MSG.

  • Where to get olive oil that doesn't involve paying some supermarket a premium? Any means to buy a bottle or two direct from a producer that doesn't need a minimum of £100 quids worth?

  • Embassy Electrical Supplies, 76 Compton St, London EC1V 0BN

    Aka https://mroliveoil.com/

  • Find a local packaging free shop?

I use these guys. Not cheap but works out about the same as supermarket prices but it's way nicer

  • found this houmous in morrisons recently and it's delicious

fucking LOVE this stuff. it is unbeatable

  • usually go here - https://www.adimaria.co.uk/

shipping charges though so aim to buy pizza bits too (fior de latte, 00 flour)

  • Gonna make this tonight, have got her book too.

What did you serve with? Looks mega rich so maybe just some simple greens?

    Same q at @TW

  • Thanks oil gang. Ordered a couple of testers.

There is a refill-type shop near us but their oils are way more expensive even than fancy supermarket ones for some reason (£20+ a litre depending on which you go for).

  • I'm a lasagne on its own kinda guy.

  • Definitely needs grated cheese.

What's the point in unsalted butter though?

  • What's the point in unsalted butter though?

Agreed, same thing as vegan 'burger' - misses the point.

  • Think it is a class thing dating back to when only posh people could have unsalted butter because they have ice/refrigeration.

  • Use it in baking.

    Never on toast.

  • Dunno if this is for here or the 40k kitchen appliance thread (or straight to golf club) but….
If you’ve got a stainless grill plate that’s a bastard to keep clean then I urge you to purchase a Jantex grill stone.
This little bit of pumice magic has got me using the plate again where usually just the thought of cleaning it would stop me from firing it up.

  • Dinner 100% out of the garden tonight with hen mushrooms fried like chicken. I made a dent in the plate before I thought to take a pic.

  • does anyone have a deep fat fryer I can borrow for a weekend?

  • What type of chilli am I making at the weekend?

  • I have one of these 3.2L Russell Hobbs jobs and can deliver Catford way no problem. Bit dusty from sitting on top of a kitchen cupboard for a while.
