That amazing version of Wild is The Wind was the death knell I reckon. But maybe that was a reflection of the wider music industry as well, everyone was chasing the big bucks in the 80s.

Middle aged musicians in interviews who bang on about there being no originality in modern music and that they decided to step up with their new project to do something about it which then ends up sounding like the most generic possible imitation of whatever genre they've opted to jump into.
