  • What variety did you do? Another chance for me to plug the “special Swiss” sweetcorn from the real seed company https://www.realseeds.co.uk/sweetcorn.html which has never failed me.

I had the first cobs over the weekend and they were excellent. I’ve barely watered them this year (been so wet I haven’t needed to) but did a bit to get them established.

I went for some F1 hybrid last year and got zero cobs off 40 plants.

  • Realseeds are amazing, all my favourites have come from them with the exception of a nice yellow plum cherry tom my wife planted this year. I have also had some stinkers, mind, such as a Strathclyde kale which never did well on my plot, but I suppose that is the nature of heirloom plants - they are adapted to particular soils and climes.

I have really enjoyed their Huazontl 'aztec broccoli' which is a goosefoot similar to 'fat hen' - tender spears of flowerbuds which steam like asparagus and taste like a cross between spinach and quinoa. Really easy to grow and highly productive.
