I have the distinct impression that when a lot of Westerners talk about Anime, they mean not just "Animation created in Japan" but "Japanese animated films of a paticular genre and style". I could say that Akira falls in that genre/style while Spirited Away does not, but I'd be lying since I was stoned out of my gourd when I watched Akira.
I'm told the Japanese call any animated film from anywhere "Anime" and I don't think I was on anything when I heard that.
None of it?
The more popular movies seem to get a good review (Akira, Spirited Away)
Live action movies and Netflix's determination to buy up all the franchises and turn them into CGI hasn't helped.
