  • Just out of curiosity, what is the recommendation from on here on chainline acceptable « tolerance » for ss?
I currently have a ss with 47.5mm chainline front and back (theoretical at least), and my other wheelset is designed for 43.5mm chainline. Might use one or the other wheelset, still undecided, and unsure if it is worth changing bb if I change wheelset.

my feeling is that being within +/- 5mm of the front chainline would be ok for ss use but wondering what are the recommendations/habits of people here

Depends on the chain. With bushed 1/8" chain, I try to dial it in to ±1mm. If you're using 8-speed or higher bushingless dérailleur chain, 5mm is one gear shift off perfect alignment
