  • Oh ho ho, that wasn't quite what I meant. Come say 'Hi' does not mean bawl 'Do a Skid!' at me whilst I'm Saluting the Sun. Good thing I wasn't in the Downward Dog or there might have been a proper skid on my jockeys.

  • Yoga session today was off the hook, feel totally energised!

  • Reeee-vive.

    As Steve Hogg
says if you are doing lots of riding you need to be doing some sort of stretching!

He recommends someone in his video who just teaches 'stretches'.
If this works for you, do it.
If Pilates works for you, again, do it.

If yoga is your thing, here are a couple of my tips:

    1. In my opinion the 'power yoga co' in SW6 is the best yoga studio in London with loads of choice of different classes/levels and styles

    2. The light centre in the Moorgate/Victoria is also good with pilates/yoga alternatives. It has my favouritest of all teachers there.

    3. Triyoga is decent if you work in Soho/Camden but I think the standard of teaching is better at the other two. Triyoga probably has the nicest studios though.

    4. All 3 do introductory month deals (between £25 - £40) which are great value, use them and abuse them and work out which style/teachers you like. Find teachers that you like, and trust me, you'll keep coming back

    5. If you are a beginner, check that the classes are suitable for you. Remember it is your body and your practice, enjoy it.

    6. For anyone cycling lots I would recommend 'yin' yoga the most.

  • I am keen to get back to a class when my work allows it but can anyone recommend some good yoga for cyclists videos on YouTube that I can do at home?

I have the usual knee, lower back, tight glutes, neck/upper back issues.

    Cheers

  • You might be best starting with a good bike fit. Tbh

  • I had a bike fit a couple of weeks ago

  • Hmm.... seems to an holistic problem. Hopefully yoga or Pilates can sort it if the bike fit didn't.

  • What do you mean by a 'holistic' problem?

  • In the same way you went to see a bike fitter, I would see a qualified yoga instructor.

Most people are pretty poor at self assessing form during exercise and proprioception is often pretty bad too. You want someone to teach you good form from the beginning rather than having to unlearn bad habits later.

Go to a decent instructor Rebecca @Bogue is one I would suggest. Otherwise go to the Iyengar Centre in Maida Vale. Iyengar yoga is not dynamic (you are a fucking cyclist so should not have to worry about cardio!) it concentrates on postures, and alignment and you can then apply the same principles on the bike.

I also teach yoga, and specialise in working with cyclists but visit London intermittently.

  • Hi James,

Thanks for your advice. I have been to Rebecca's class before. I really enjoyed it but find it difficult to commit to 6 week block bookings due to work (she does not offer a drop-in service AFAIK).

I understand about learning bad habits but would be keen to follow some videos of some stretches that may help me get over my discomfort on the bike. I have been doing back bridges and some other things for my glutes as recommended by the bike fitter.

Hopefully I can get back to Rebecca's classes at some point. I will look into the Iyengar Centre.

    Cheers!

If you've done the class before, drop-in is usually fine--ask her. It's only for people who are new that she requires them to gradually build up through the full sequence of classes.

  • Any recommendations for yoga classes in the north Birmingham - Walsall area? I've been doing some at home to help with flexibility, but am leery of picking up back habits - would like some classes to get the fundamentals locked in.

  • Hi oliver,

Thanks, I will check with Rebecca.

  • Rebecca's latest e-mail:

    Greetings cyclists, yogis and friends,

I hope this finds you well and plotting a Summer tour or three!

Here is the latest YFC update...

    1. 4 week YFC course at Wusi in Hackney:

The next course will take place at Wusi once more: 4 Broadway Market
    Mews, E8 4TS
    (http://www.wusi.co.uk). The class will run 7 - 8.30pm on Monday night's
starting 12th June - 3rd July. Apologies this is shorter than the
usual 6-week course. I might be away for work 9th - 18th July but
won't know 'til early July. If I don't go, then I'm happy to add on
another couple of classes. The price for the full course then wil be
£45 on this occasion and £35 for 3 weeks (this option is available to
those who have completed the course and attend from week 2). If you
have never attended a YFC course, I would encourage you to attend the
full course and first class especially as this is when the basic YFC
    principles are introduced.

If you have any questions or would like to join this course, do email
(letting me know how many weeks you can make) as soon as possible to
ensure your space and I can pass on payment details/ answer questions
    etc.

    1. Weekly drop-in class at Triyoga Chelsea:

Yoga for Sports drop-in class every Sunday: 5.15 - 6.30pm at Triyoga
Chelsea: 372 Kings Road, SW3 5UZ. Please book via Triyoga.
    https://www.triyoga.co.uk/chelsea-2.

    1. One-to-one sessions in Kings Cross

I offer one-to-one sessions at my studio in Kings Cross. Home visits
    can also be arranged.

    See you soon I hope!

  • Have you come across Peter Blackaby ... We should talk yoga sometime!

  • Epic thread dredge!

My wonderful partner Lizzie has just launched her own online yoga studio as a recently qualified teacher. Focus will be on restorative practices and sexual empowerment from Tantra and Raja Dhiraja Yoga, based on Patanjali's eight limbs of yoga.

It’s mostly aimed at womxn for the time being and she’s still at the stage of creating content but there’s free online live classes as well at the mo.

Give her a follow and a share if that’s your kinda thing.

  • Hope it goes well - I only do a few minutes a day - it makes a difference.

  • Prob worth posting here as well: https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/157019/

Think it gets a bit more traffic.

Best of luck for your partner.

  • I do an hour to two hours most days. Saw an osteopath last week for the first time she said given my injury history if I wasn’t doing daily yoga I’d be practically immobile now.

  • Another shameless plug for my partner, she’s now teaching yoga at Exotique Dance Studio in Tottenham.
Still mostly aimed at womxn but all welcome.
