• did 2 x 130mile journeys along the a40 to west wales last weekend in mum and dads 2008 1.9TDI mk.5 Golf, and if VW data can be believed, managed 70mpg each way. had to coast up to the drive on the return leg as had 69.9 on the average fuel consumption with 500meteres to go but got it to 70.
amazed how fuel efficient a 2008 golf is, 130,000 on the clock and still runs lovely, starts first time every time. would recommend as a decent 2nd hand family car

  • I've had plenty of VAG groups TDI's over the years.. old 90bhp non-pd engines, then a few 1.9 PD engines, all had over 100k on them and ran them all with tuning boxes.. always went well and gave consistent high MPG's.. My brother still has a 2000 polo 1.9TDI with 260bhp and 380 lb/ft.. it's been to the Nürburgring and we went left the ring it came home to Belfast on one tank of diesel..

hmmmm.... wonder if my mum would notice if i tune it up to 260bhp, i doubt she's ever buried her foot in it, might give her a surprise the next time she goes to overtake and make for some more fun journeys for me
