There's a lot to be said for giving even new vinyl a wet clean.
Dust and debris should be visible anyway. Might be worth brushing every side you play.
Also some microfibre cloths will leave more fluffy crap in the groove that you may remove through cleaning, which is annoying and defeats the whole idea. -
Vinyl folks with much more experience than I - I keep experiencing dust balls on my stylus with new vinyl. Tonight I’m listening to my brand new reissued copy of Nixon by Lambchop for the second time and I can hear heavy distortion on the vocals. I have a look and there’s a big chunk of dust and debris trailing from the stylus. I lift the needle and clean it with a brush which pretty much ruins the listening experience, but it’s probably going to come back. This is not unusual, and as I write this the second track is fucking up. It’s making me want to stream it rather than listen to the vinyl. What’s happening here and how can I defeat it pls?
For me it always depends regarding dust and debris, on the weather / how long my window is open that day.. also on the discs themselves - new vinyl sometimes being very static-y.. (wet cleaning helps with this, if you don't have a dedicated apparatus that does it for you you can also use 10% isopropanol / 90% water in a spray bottle and a fine microfiber cloth, wiping along the groves).
I oftentimes use one of these to quickly & gently brush away any stuff when I put on a record / when I flip it over, this reduces build-up on the stylus -
..and I thought brushes for the needle were overrated, but I've found that it does help, especially after playing new vinyl, especially new vinyl that hasn't been wet cleaned before, as the stylus carves out quite a bit of shit from the groves oftentimes..
