Cheers, I reckon I’ll give it a go then. Got to be better than nothing.

Ex bike mechanic here but when we had “pinging” floating hope rotors we sent them back to hope. They always fixed them or replaced. Now I have got a front rotor retail (out of the business due to poor pay) and the retailer has forwarded me an email saying it’s supposed to be like that. Just curious what other shops approaches have been?

Pinging floating rotors is pretty normal, in my experience

• #5130
Pinging how? When cooling down after braking, or making that characterising ‘squelching/chattering’ sound when braking?

Was there ever a mass-produced 1" stem that accommodated 31.8mm bars? Suspect not.

Nitto make one
Quill or ahead?

Edit - sorted.

On a cheap end you get ergotec with their adjustable height ones that come as a quill/31.8mm variety. On other end of spectrum you have Vo, nitto, crust. Aliexpress has some bootleg versions of whatever fancy neo retro thing with hidden faceplate if you like gambling. I would go with nitto.

I know the answer, but just want to hear somebody else say it as well.
I have a shagged right hand and in the winter it goes properly west. So I normally go singlespeed/fixed at the first signs of subzero temps, but this year I’m going to run a bar end shifter. This time I want to put the rear shifter on the left. Other than having to remember to shift with my left hand I see no problems. Unless anyone knows differently. -

It'll be fine yeah. You also can experiment with having the gear lever atop vs underneath the handlebar.

Thanks @MCamb and @Dave_Whitinsky. It's ahead and 1", which is the challenge. I've had a look through Nitto's catalogue and couldn't find anything that matched. Maybe just have to make do with a shim.

• #5138
Nothing wrong with shimming! If you like the skinny look 1 1/8” steel stems have the same OD as 1” alu stems (on the steerer clamp)

Sorry assumed quill. Nitto x crust actually makes one in i inch threadless for 31.8 but with shipping it might be cost prohibitive

If you don't mind me asking, what is it about the winter that fucks your hand up? If it's a circulation issue and you've not tried lobster gloves, I'd highly recommend them. My hands turn to blocks of ice and they're a game changer for me.

Hey team. What would be your recommendation for touching up this rusty spot? Anything other than wet n dry and painting over it?

Nothing much more than that.
You can spare some metal by starting with lemon juice and wire wool - it'll take surface rust off really well.
Do use primer, do use wet n dry between layers and do consider either a gloss black or a gloss clear coat to match original paintwork.

Thanks pal, thought that might be a Q for you 😉

Where to start with my hand? I snapped my thumb 30 odd years ago and it was pinned to my finger and down to my wrist, badly. They took out the pins, but my thumb has had limited mobility since and now the bones are fusing together to limit movement even further. On top of that I have trigger finger from braking 3 of my fingers. I also have Raynaud's from years of (improper) heavy tool use.
I can’t shift Campy because of the buttons even in the summer, in fact Sram is about the only thing I can shift without pain, because I can use my good finger on the single paddle. I put on thick gloves the padding effect means I can’t push levers.
Gawd I think I’d better go out the back and shoot myself, I’d have to use my left hand mind. -

Love a rusty resto!
I forgot to mention... If you have T-Cut or similar then you can use it following the final layers of paint to blend with surrounding original paintwork. Satisfyingly seamless!

Di2 time!

Oooft, yeah that sounds sub optimal! The lobsters help loads with my Raynaud's. Not sure how you'd get on with the reduced mobility of those though.

I didn’t mention that I’m also spendaphobic ;)

Thanks for the suggestion though. I was trying to get work to spring for some heated gloves, but no dice. I don’t want to buy in case they don’t help.

It's cheap if it keeps you riding. Di2 was the answer for my dad in his last years when a combination of arthritis and Dupuytren's contracture made other road shifters impossible.
What is wrong with a bit of threaded bar, a few washers and bolts?
