Hello again. Anybody in the thread sitting on an older Apple (or not) display they're thinking about moving on? Going to keep working with the laptop I've got until it gives out, think having a nice screen and a mouse would make a big difference. 2015 MBP so Thunderbolt/HDMI ideally. Thanks.

I have a mint condition 27” Apple Cinema Display up for grabs. It’s the original MiniDP version, works perfectly with any Mac using the correct adapter. Shout if you’re interested.

I might be interested in this if @margot_skidder is not. Google suggests it still looks nice and you only need a slightly expensive adapter if you have an intel mac, or if you have an M1 et seq you must also download some free software to ensure you can adjust settings. I miss my old iMac screen so let me know.

Sure, will let you know if @margot_skidder doesn’t take it.
It’s a great display even today, I just have no use for it anymore.

New iPhone 15: https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2023/09/apple-debuts-iphone-15-and-iphone-15-plus/
Still paying for my 14, so I'll wait until that's done (Oct 2024?) and then get a 15 or a 16 depending on what is around. My 14 will then go to Mrs GB and then her 12 Mini (my previous phone) will go to the ungrateful child (who is currently suffering with her iPhone 7).

You can pry my 13 Mini from my cold dead hands.

I dread finding a small phone once my SE dies.
-
• #20686
SE still on sale from Apple (Looks like they've dropped the minis from the range, you can get a 13 but not a 13 mini).
I used second hand iPhones from eBay for years without any problems. That's what I'd do if I still wanted something smaller than the standard 13/14/15.
Initially I thought the jump from 12 mini to 14 would be too big but I'm so used to it now. Mrs GB's 12 mini seems tiny whenever I have to use it.

I've been waiting to replace my 11 with a 15 (and give my wife my 11 to replace my old 7 she uses).
Only question: is 256GB enough storage? I have an upgraded icloud storage, but my son has just been born so there will be a lot of videos and photos. -
• #20688
Yes, plenty. Store things in the cloud, not on the phone
-
• #20689
That depends on how lazy you are. I backup my photos to google photos so delete all the photos on my local storage monthly. I have a 64gb 12 Mini, take a shit load of photos and videos of my dogs, consume about 12gb on offline maps alone, have music saved locally and I rarely run out. Just don't keep your entire photo library on there and its plenty. And also don't use all 48 megapixels if you don't need them, and you'll be fine.

Brave move to trust stuff you value to Google with their habit of shuttering services at a whim.
iPhone related question here- mine has been trying to restore from iCloud backup for a month now and never progresses, and I can’t update the software until it does. What do?

If they close Google Photos there'd be ample warning. No big dealio.

If this is going to be your main receptacle of photos of cjr jnr then definitely this
Store things in the cloud, not on the phone

You'd hope so but worth remembering that Google also has form for disabling accounts for unspecified policy violations when the user is convinced they've done nothing wrong, and to quote a Google Support thread:
Nothing more can be done to recover the account; there is no appeal mechanism available; the account name cannot be re-used. The account data will not be recoverable, unless Google have specifically offered this option.
Unfortunately, no further assistance is available.
So it's always worth making periodic local backups (I need to do this too).
I don't completely trust any cloud service and always make local backups for that reason.

Switch to USB C is a bit lame. But then I guess they don't want folks using cables for charging and they want folks using cloud to back stuff up.

Best thing about the 15 Pro is the £100 price drop over the 14 Pro. $999 = £999 (again) vs £1099 last year. Pound has risen against the Dollar, but it was a nice surprise.

Switch to USB C is a bit lame
Wasn’t a choice, they were required to adopt a standard cable by the EU
-
• #20697
I know - good intentions, road to hell etc.
It sounded like they were going to fight it for the bat-shit insane overreach that it actually was, but now I suspect it suits them, not customers, and makes the EU's thinking on this look good, which is kinda the worst of both worlds.

What about quality and compatibility issues? I know even cheap cables had to adhere to some kind of apple standard due to licensing deals, but is this the case with USB-C as well?
-
• #20699
Just buy decent cables from reputable suppliers, and understand that these will cost a bit more.
Cheap things will be crap and/or melt.
At least 3 of the "cheaper" cables I bought weren't able to handle:
- dock to laptop (needs to handle 65W power plus lots of data including the feed to a 4K 60Hz monitor)
- laptop to portable monitor (needs to provide both power and data)
Most annoying for me will be headphones. I don't like earbuds and prefer wired headphones. Eventually I'll need a bunch that have USB-C rather than lightning (I'm still using a few with the old headphone jack using a headphone-jack to lightning adapter).

There are plenty of shit iphone cables out there too. Buy from decent suppliers (probably still at a lower cost than a licensed iphone cable) and they are fine, particularly just for phone charging. It's when you get to the high power charging and data that you run into problems.
At some point in the future I'll be glad to cut down on the number of cables we have plugged in and only need to take one extra cable (watch charger) away with me.
I just did that, I put the new phone next to the old SE, and the new phone sucked everything out of the old SE and it's all good. Some sort of magic wifi trick, no need for icloud backup (I don't use icloud).
