  • It still make sense if you can't afford a real Mac (I didn't do mine on a budget as it was an insurance replacement for my old hack I got wet), relish the challenge, want something which is also a truly native PC, or are a control freak who wants to spec the build yourself ;)

Fundamentally though I wouldn't disagree with you.

  • Worth adding that the hackintosh community has some very capable, experienced people in it.

It's entirely possible that in time someone will find a way to get around the chip issue.

Apple have tried to stop people hackintoshing before (see Dont_Steal_Mac_OS_X.kext) and that didn't work. Changing the silicon is obviously more drastic, but kernels can be patched and decompiled. Never say never...

  • I'm not against people doing it. Personally I don't have a problem with the price of a Mac given the time my previous ones have lasted. It wouldn't appeal to me to take on the technical challenges but I'm happy there are some people out there who have the time and energy to dedicate to it.

  • Is there any way to get real apple power-supply adapters for traveling without paying the 30-40 for a "travel pack" which includes a load of ones I'll never use? I left my Australian one somewhere and want to replace it for my macbook but other than some on ebay, I've found nothing.

  • Thanks; that's the problem. Loads of EU/UK/US ones, not much Australian.

  • That's great to hear - I'll do some research and see if it's for me!

  • ^^If you are going to Australia then I’d imagine their flavour of Amazon (or an Australian Apple Store) might be a good bet?

  • ..can somebody please point me to that guy again that does those Apple Mighty / Magic Keyboard "clones"?

  • Apple don't sell single ones, only the "travel pack" which includes 2x US, UK, 3x EU, and one aus one. I'll just "borrow" one at the office i think

  • Sorry I'm an idiot and I've got an iphone question that I hope the hove mind of LFGSS can help with.

I've got an old 2016 SE and it's dying on its ass. Battery life is now laughable as is the memory. If I buy a used 2022 SE, how easy is it to transfer everything over? Not just the apps, I want to transfer over all my Whatsap conversations etc too. Would they get lost?

    Thanks.

  • I pray to the tech gods before any migration but the last few times everything has worked out alright.

  • Most things transfer automatically as long as you’ve backed up to iCloud recently.

WhatsApp is not one of those but you just need to make sure you’ve done a backup in the WhatsApp settings.

  • I'm thinking about getting an old iPad Pro 10.5 / 11 / 12.9 Gen 1 - is there any point?

No idea what I'd use it for

  • They are still pretty powerful. If you're into drawing/painting/music apps there's loads of them. 12.9 is quite heavy. Main downside is fingerprint recognition not face recognition.

  • In all of my moves from one iPhone to another I've always just backed up the old iPhone in iTunes and then restored it on to the new iPhone and pretty much everything is there. I don't use iCloud at all.

(There are some things that don't copy over, such as saved passwords and wifi passwords, which is a bit annoying, but less of a problem if you use a password manager.)

  • It’s really easy if you can use the ‘quick start’ method. Have iCloud backup. Bring the phones together. let them do other thing. New phone is exactly like old phone. You do have to set up security things again like touch/Face ID, and anything in Apple Pay.

..to answer my own question, it's Matias!

They do such nice things as a tenkeyless variant..

..alas only in US or "Nordic" layout, I now realize ☹️

  • It’s really easy if you can use the ‘quick start’ method. Have iCloud backup. Bring the phones together.

Speaking from experience this doesn't work so smoothly if the old phone isn't capable of running the latest version of iOS; make sure to at least update both devices as good as you can @Tadpole.

Also as mentioned before, some things don't store all the things locally on your device (like whatsapp), so ideally do backups of stuff.

Mail accounts didn't sync properly as well last time I moved to a new iPhone, so be sure to have all your account details on hand as well 👍

  • Those 'clones' are a bit more than I thought they'd be - if the budget stretches a bit it's worth considering the MX Keys from Logitech which are about £100ish. Mine's been great for the couple of years I've had it and it fits in okay with the Mac aesthetic (they do an MX Keys Mini now too).

  • I have an MX Keys Mini - it's great. Plenty nice enough to dump a couple of other mechanical keyboards I have.

  • I have the same, I love it, batt life is a little underwhelming but not a huge issue

  • Any interest in this 2017 MacBook Pro with a few lines of what I assume are dead pixels on the screen?

I got it when I was self employed 2017-2020 then it got put in a drawer about 3 years ago due to new job, then a few months ago my partners old MacBook died so I gave her this one to use and the screen was like this when turned on after three years of hibernation.

She’s been using it with a monitor and keyboard/mouse, and everything is working fine apart from the weird screen!

She just bought a new MacBook Pro, so not really sure what to do with this now or what it’s worth with the dodgy screen?

  • On that subject, is there any easy way to ID what retina screen you have? The replacements online all list a load of model numbers but do I just pick whatever they say works for a mid-2017 13" retina with function keys (my personal one got knocked off a desk at work).

  • In the end I called a mate in Australia and asked him to post one to the hotel I'll stay at when I first arrive. Seemed easier than the faff of buying one from China, Australia or the US.
