    A stress fracture may not be readily apparent after an impact.
    If components aren't kept clean:

    1. there is less of an imperative to look after it
    2. difficult to do visual and safety inspections.

    You're looking at the heel rub, @Carabo is talking about the different colouration across the face of the crack.

    @iC you don't happen to work for Miche do you? Just that "Unless there is an impact these cranks should last a long time." sounds very similar to "...they must have been crashed..." which was Miche's response to the 60 odd sets we had with cracks.
