@Brommers Notsureifpisstake.gif Surely that's like 1.5m of visual span? I'm not even gonna bother asking why so much. Invest in a Physio.
Not a piss take. They're arranged in an arc around the corner of my home office. Never found it to be a problem. Maybe I'm part human, part owl.
The right hand side portrait monitor isn't one I use a lot, but it's handy being able to have two pdf documents open on the two portrait mode monitors so I can compare and contrast them, particularly when reviewing document revisions where the author hasn't used tracked changes.

Does anyone have a Firewire card sitting around gathering dust they want rid of?
-
• #8780
I might. Old PCI one. I'll have a look in a bit
-
• #8781
Thanks. Will the older PCI cards fit in newer PCIe slots?
-
• #8782
Nope. You can get an adapter, but it looks like that'll cost about £45 ...

Looks like this

Thanks both. I think it's just gonna be easier getting the PCIe jobbie and then getting rid when I'm done. Cheers

You can get firewire ports that just plug into the headers on the motherboard.

That would require a mobo with firewire shit though?
I've ordered a PCIe card now. So, once I'm done ripping my videos if anyone needs a USB capture card, S-Vid cable or Firewire card...
-
• #8787
Just the pins. They aren't always surrounded by plastic, most motherboards have them.

If you have a spare firewire cable you don't mind cutting up you can even wire some dupont connectors onto the end and just plug it straight onto the pins.

I don't think my mobo has firewire support

I thought I'd posted this upthread already

Most motherboards haven’t come with FireWire headers for over a decade now. It’s been a dead protocol for ages.
Note the ancient PCI slots in those photos…

Any reason not to expand my storage capacity with another Samsung SSD? 2TB or 4TB I guess..

It's prime day in 2 days time, they are going to go on sale.

What is Prime Day? The day when trucks start talking?
I don't have Bezos Prime - will I benefit?
Appreciate the heads-up either way though.

They market it like black friday and run special offers, usually some decent deals on SSDs and HDDs.
Take the free trial and cancel it if they insist you must have it to get the deal price?

I already got a Pixel 6a and £260 router on order. Let's see how sad I am in a couple of days
"1) What is Prime Day? Prime Day is Amazon's deal event exclusively for Prime members, featuring personalized deals and top brands. The event came to life for customers on July 15, 2015, as a way to celebrate Prime members on Amazon's 20th birthday."

For a little bit more money I could get an external 2TB which might be useful with the laptop as well.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-T7-Portable-SSD-MU-PC2T0T/dp/B087DFFJRD/But how much slower is that likely to be than the SATA option? It's not like I'm doing heaving editing or anything but I don't want it to be total shite.
-
• #8798
But how much slower is that likely to be than the SATA option?
If you connect it to a USB3.2 port, the transfer rate is potentially faster than SATA III, although in practice both are more likely to be throttled at the ends rather than in the middle.

• #8799
Does your machine not have M.2 NVME slot(s)? SATA is old and slow, and not that much cheaper per jigglybite these days...

Too much conflicting info. Seems it's only true with the newest USB3 versions. I have USB3 but it's an old board so certainly not going to be fastest protos. Assume same performance it's basically a question of do I want the faff+convenience of external ?
Just checked and mine's USBC3.1

Basically pretty set on an ultrawide now I understand what they can do.
Thanks all.
