  • Runaway diesel isn’t the same thing. That’s often due to unwanted fuel or oil getting into the cylinders which causes the engine to run away. It’ll often only stop once it’s consumed all the oil in the sump.

My mum's fiat 500 did this, was not fun apparently.

  • I had a company Isuzu pick up do it to me after I booted it out of a junction turning right on the A4. It just went into infinite acceleration with a massive white cloud out of the back. I sort of knew what was happening but I could stop where I was so went a couple of hundred metres further before switching the ignition off and standing on the brakes. I got out quickly because it smellt like it was going up. It had done a touch of the *Torrey Canyon all along the road and it appeared that the increased crankcase pressure had blown all the seals bathing the engine in oil too. I called the filth to get them to call out the council for a clean up of the road and with assistance got the truck off the road. That was the day before Boris told everyone to leave work and go home. As far as I know it still isn't fixed.

    • That's one for older readers. I was going to suggest Exxon Valdez for the young'uns but that was 1989!
