  • Old. Compton Street, off St John's. I'd like to know more...

New. No golden owl here but illuminating and wise nevertheless. Phossy Jaw no more...

  • all about the oil?

That’s the main attraction I think, but he does various dried herbs too, it smells really good in there. Fluorescent tubes and other electrical miscellany also.

  • Easy clue if necessary

  • OLD: former site of a Salvation Army semi-ethical match factory (no, really), Jodrell rd by Victoria Park.

  • oat will be along shortly with the lantern slides to explain his tag.
The mural was done in 1985 apparently. Nothing like a bit of trompe l’oiel to get round Google lens.

  • Nothing like a bit of trompe l’oiel to get round Google lens

    Bravo.

    Although: Pol-Pot, Kettle drum?

  • Thanks for the @reply, the quote and addressing my post would have confused me otherwise.
There's a reason I mentioed trompe l'oiel and it's nothing to do with Google.

  • After the matchgirl strikes at Bryant and May in 1888, this second match factory (from 1891) was itself a kind of protest, designed to deliberately undermine the bigger Bryant and May one that caused so much suffering (Phossy Jaw sounds particularly unpleasant). William Booth used only the more expensive Red phosphorus which didn't have the same nasty side effects as White/yellow Phosphorus, refused to use child labour and insisted on fair pay and decent working conditions.
His matches were 3 times the price but through campaigning he raised their profile so much that it eventually forced a permanent change. Bryant and May bought the factory 10 years later on the condition they adopted the new standards.

I apologise for the @ reply etc.

It's really just a habit that I have on this forum to hit reply when I want to reply to something. And to sub quote if I want to address a particular part of the post in question.

To be fair, it's a habit I've developed out of courtesy to those reading my posts to make the conversation easier to follow, given the (in my view warranted) lack of intra-thread threading in microcosm.

I know it pisses you off a bit and upsets the Feng Shui of your updates page. For which I hold a deep sense of regret.

On balance, I'll probably keep doing it. Apologies beyond measure for now and the future.

    Sincerely,

    Your faithful servant,

    Matt Ashton

  • It's really just how this forum works and we didn't design it and constantly moaning about it is super tedious and perhaps you should take it up with Velocio

  • Meoooow.

  • No mention of bring back rep?

  • Meoooow

Not supposed to sound catty, I'm just saying what Mr Ashton said in a more direct way.

I personally don't find it difficult to remember not to @ you, but as it's the default behaviour of the forum when a user clicks reply your continued railing against it seems somewhat Canute-like.

  • I'm tempted to write a web script thingy that Will could use to strip out unwanted replies from his updates page.

  • Would it bring back rep ;)
