Can somebody please help me understand why titanium bikes are a good thing? Seem like they are expensive, break a lot, and are hard to repair.

I don't think they are. I've never owned one because they make no sense.
Lighter than steel? Oh wow, so is aluminium. Comfier than aluminium, oh wow, so is steel.
and then you can just stick carbon in there to beat all of them, without the stupid price tag of Ti.
