London-Dunwich-London(LDL)
CYCLE RACE TRAFFIC WARNING.
If you are riding back to London on Sunday 02/07/2023 after DDXXXI, please be aware that the B184 between Great Dunmow and Leaden Roding is on the course of the National 50 mile Time-Trial Championship. If you are on this section between 06:00 and 10:30, expect to be overtaken by FAST cycle-traffic. If you are in a group please ride in tidy single-file. TT Competitors will turn at Dunmow and thus be racing on both sides of the road, increasing potential conflict with motor-traffic. If you’d prefer to avoid this excitement there’s a detour - and more information - listed here...The TT Race Route is also shown and a route from Great Bardfield to Writtle because if you are fond of cycle sub-culture bingo and want to go for a record number of ticks in one weekend there’s a cordial invitation from event organiser, and DD veteran Arthur Knowler, to head down to the National50 event HQ at Writtle College where food and drink will be served until 11:30. Drink tea and spot lots of VERY big chainrings and VERY pointy hats.
*PLEASE CIRCULATE THIS WARNING TO ANY RELEVANT NETWORKS*
thanks

Ridden the DD 5 times, the last and my favourite was 2010 when 5 others and myself rode it on Bromptons.
The reason for it being my favourite is one being able to just fold the bike up and get m at Darsham.
But the best highlight was riding alongside strangers in the middle of the night chatting away and then as the sun started to rise them realising that we were on Bromptons.Definitely do not use a route planner/computer!
I’d also suggest not using super bright rear lights (especially on strobe) it can really mess with other riders night vision.Have fun those who are riding this year

especially on strobe
Yeah flashing rear lights put me into a proper trance when I’m doing an overnight ride. Can’t stand it.

Not far off seizure inducing

No way! Wasn't expecting that. Looks like a good one this year, enjoy.

Yep it's always been around my birthday which ended up being just that little bit too inconvenient but this year it's at the start of the month so my excuses have all faded away.

excellent :) I'll keep an eye out for you

Folks, if anyone is still needing a lift back, Islington CC have opened up their last remaining tickets to non members for a coach back to Highbury, best option if you're based north of the river.

coach ticket acquired - I'm in!

How much will I regret it if I don't take a bag with a hoodie or something warm to put on afterwards? If I'm in shorts and a jersey am I going to die?
Multiple hours hanging around a beach sounds chilly.

I did it in l-s jersey and shorts many years ago, on an averagely warm summer evening, similar to what's forecast for this year. That was fine. Didn't hang around the beach for long as had to cycle back, but can't imagine it being an issue unless there's a cruel breeze and you're a bit depleted.
Also, the cafe (which is the only show in town foodwise) didn't do anything vegan so was only able to give me a dry bread roll. That may have changed since the vegans won, but it is still Norfolk...

Perfect. Wind jacket in the jersey pocket it is, then, I think. Not planning to ride back unless I'm feeling particularly sprightly (unlikely).

Suffolk Shirley?
-
• #43
shorts and short sleeves is fine for riding but its nice to put some arm warmers and a gilet/jacket on when you start to cool down on the beach.

• #44
Meh, it's all East Angular.

• #45
If anyone wants a coach ticket for the return journey and hasn't yet booked there seem to be quite a few being advertised on the DD Facebook group if that is your kinda thing
-

Defo take an extra layer. You soon cool down if you stop for food/beer. We did to Great Bardfield and then back to London last year. 25°c plus at 8pm but chilly by 1am. ...might do to Dunmow and back this year...
Re: following rear lights. We had to stop four times leaving Great Bardfield last year to tell people not to follow us!

They do vegan pasties now!

Route for DD here (if anyone follows the route and if anyone pays for Komoot)

Bus ticket question. I bought one from Ilsington cc but all I've got it recipt of payment front pay pal is the order number the ticket number of should I be getting a bar code or something?
Ride back to the train at Southend-on-sea is a great route, about the same distance as riding back to London though. But you get to go on two ferries.
Or the coach from Dunwich, which just takes quite long:
