    01 - 02 July 2023

Meet at London Fields on Saturday evening. Ideally don't set off too early. 9pm has long been the recommended time. Not that that's going to stop anyone from leaving at 6 to get to the beach much too early. 116 miles across Essex and Suffolk to the great lost city. Don't miss out, coastal erosion continues and the ride gets shorter every year.

Take your swimming kit and jump into the sea when you're still warm from the ride.

You won't have any problem finding your way, as thousands of others do it. You'll make new friends. Try to resist the temptation to take computer-aided navigation. Route sheets will be available at the start. Try not to take incredibly bright lights. The night is beautiful.

  • I left at 9pm last year - not travelling that slowly - 15 mph and found there was little to no food left at the stops.

  • I did it in the day time a few years ago, had a tailwind the whole way and no lights needed although I wasn’t really entering into the spirit of things…

  • ive been meaning to do this for yeas but never sorted my self out or was working but im gonna takle the plunge this year.

    IN

  • Fuck yeah dude. Am tempted to do it this year. Think will be my 5th or 6th. But need to sort my Sunday job out first

  • Last time I did it I booked a train back, is there anything like that again?

  • No, Greater Anglia don't do that anymore after changing their rolling stock/bike capacity: https://www.greateranglia.co.uk/about-us/news-desk/news-articles/greater-anglia-issues-travel-advice-dunwich-dynamo-2023-cyclists

  • A bit of deliberate or accidental Patridge?

  • Would really like to do this again, but last time I rode both ways and I'm in no way fit enough to do that now. So, if the railways are playing silly buggers, not really feasible.

  • They explicitely bar you from boarding the trains, though i improvised it last year and we cycled down to Manningtree where we jumped on a train coming from Harwich which is another line.

  • fingers crossed Jonny would be great to see ya. would have ben nice to do it fixed but im prob way to unfit and my fixed in bits at the mo... i will be taking my swimming trunks :)

  • Need to do this again but don't think it will be this year.

Agree with Oliver on the anti computer-aided navigation tip. Was amazing to do the whole thing following other peoples rear lights all night.

  • Planning on riding this too. No idea how I'm getting back though. Some of the group I'm riding with are talking about riding back too and many of them are capable of pulling this off. Hmmmm...

Last time I rode it in 2019 there were tea lights indicating the route, well at least at key junctions. That and the thousands of other riders of course.

It really can be quite special.

  • and don't forget for those less keen to do the full distance the dalston dynamo also runs on the same night

Interesting, thanks - now need to consider if I can manage the DD and another 40-odd miles after...

  • the other option to consider is heading West towards Stowmarket and take a train to camdridge with a switch for Kings X. i don't think there is a ban on bikes on the day from those

  • I checked with the GA ticket office in Norwich today there will be no bikes allowed on any local services for Sunday and Monday which scuppers my idea of riding on to Lowestoft and getting the train back to Norwich. I'm going to ride down to Sudbury (ish), join the lights until Dunwich and then ride back to Norwich.

  • In.

See you at London Fields @Oliver Schick and no doubt along the route at some point.

  • Yeah, following other people's lights is all fun until you end up in some guys driveway who was cycling home from work like Stompy and I did the first time I ever rode it! 😂

  • I think we added about ten miles with that little fuck up! 😂

  • There was also the year when I was in a bit of a bad head space and rode the whole way there and back on my own. Barely spoke to anyone, and took an actual overdose of painkillers which I'd been stupidly washing down with whisky. This resulted in me projectile vomiting in a chip shop toilet, and then sitting at the side of the road in Leyton, only to 'wake up' about 45 minutes later, thankfully with my bike still there! 😂
Fuck me that was a grim time!

  • Will be riding this year after a few years off, looking forward to it

Hoping that the workers cafe in the industrial estate, just off the main route before Sudbury, is still running - best egg baps, tea and cakes!

  • @oat44 see you there? stalking you cross threads. would be lovely to catch up at London Fields

  • Should be there yes! Would be great to catch up, been a long old time!

  • as a first timer what are the options for getting back .
    1 ride back
2 ride to a different train line - whats the best option?? i was going to try to head back to cambridge and thames link it back in
