Came back from a few days away over half term to discover a drowned squirrel in one of the water butts. Poor thing, presumably was trying to get a drink, fell in and couldn’t get out.

Try to keep em covered if you can, just to stop other crap like leaves or algae growing.
My mum told my son when he was four not to play near ours even though they’re covered with ‘locking’ lids as kids can fall in head first and drown because they can’t turn around. We collectively all still have nightmares, cheers mum.

We do normally. But my parents had been house sitting and watered the veg patch for us, but neglected to put the lid back on this particular one.

Coffee grounds (mainly from Nespresso machine) - are they good for plants? Any tips how and where to use the endless coffee grounds in a good way? Especially if it stops slugs/foxes/cats

Yes……earthworms love used coffee. Earthworms create great soil.
Adding them directly to plants or trying to grow in them directly I haven’t had much success. Not bad just nothing dramatically successful.

I had a colleague whose grandad died by falling off a step ladder head first into a water butt.
Obviously tragic, but i had to work very head to suppress a natural lol response when she was explaining the circumstances of his death. I was very proud of myself for managing to remain suitably dispassionate.

Doesn't stop slugs in my experience... :(
Pure grounds are too acidic and some plants react badly to caffeine but for compost it should be ok, as long as there's other material in there too.

Thanks for the tip - didn't go up to London Fields but saw a few local gardens in Lee

We did the London Fields ones and they were really impressive and varied. Fatal error not to take cash for cakes though.

Someone on here was after some pond plants. I'm removing a small pond at the weekend and will have some plants going, probably flag iris, water mint and a marsh marigold. I'm in Peckham.

First rose of the year. From a cutting, I expected the established roses to flower first.

Love it. Went for a ride in the Somerset levels yesterday, and the smell from gardens was incredible.
This rose is at work, no idea what it is.

I'd take those off your hands gladly.

Made the mistake of assuming my catmint had snuffed it over the winter and wasn’t coming back, found it yesterday, merrily sprouting away in the discarded clod of earth that I had casually chucked aside when digging it out to replace it. Have apologised profusely to it and found it a new home in a planter.
The catmint that I did not dig up to make space is, of course, still dead as a dodo, so maybe the digging up was the motivation it needed to get on with growing again.

I put a couple of very small ponds in just after moving here, a couple of months ago, and the garden is busy with damselflies already. Really does seem to be the best addition you can make to bring more insects in.

Awesome, I'll pot them up Saturday. Will DM my address.
The sparrows have absolutely destroyed my hanging basket. They’ve taken half of the straw basket lining stuff and they’ve eaten the entirety of the geranium.
Fortunately, I like sparrows more than I like hanging baskets or geraniums. I’d be bitter otherwise.
